The architects Heydecker were the brothers Leonhard Heydecker jr. (Born August 26, 1871 in Kempten ; † July 27, 1958 ibid) and Otto Heydecker (born March 29, 1885 in Kempten; † April 13, 1960 in Meersburg ). The main place of work of the two architects was their hometown Kempten.

Live and act

Leonhard and Otto were the sons of the master carpenter and furniture maker Leonhard Heydecker (1840–1915) and his wife Maria Elisabetha, née Sontheimer (1844–1910), who had several children together.

The older of the two, Leonhard Heydecker Jr., was not only an architect, but like his father also a furniture manufacturer. With his company "Archiktekt Leonhard Heydecker jr." He was first known for his construction work. However, he not only designed the buildings themselves, but often also their interiors, so that uniformly designed complete works emerged; a representative example of this is the municipal secondary school in Memmingen , which was built around 1910 and is now a listed building .

The furniture produced by Heydecker was only made to order and taking into account the wishes of customers, who came from all over southern Germany and mostly belonged to the upper middle class. The company had a second headquarters in Überlingen , where Leonhard Heydecker married. Exceptionally large sales were achieved with "absolutely soundproof" telephone booths, of which Heydecker was the sole supplier for all of Württemberg .

Otto Heydecker, fourteen years his junior, did not join the business until 1909. After attending secondary school and industrial school at the Technical University of Darmstadt, he studied civil engineering and graduated with a degree in engineering .

As “Architects Heydecker”, the two brothers took part in architectural competitions far beyond their home region and achieved considerable success. Among other things, they won in a competition for a new secondary school and a secondary school in Görlitz 2nd prize among 187 candidates in the East Prussian Olsztyn in a competition to build a new city hall is also the 2nd prize among 73 applicants. Other competitions were also made for projects in Cologne and Heidelberg .

The Heydecker brothers also worked with the painter and medalist Franz Xaver Unterseher and with the architect Andor Ákos . They planned workers' houses, mansions, workshops and factory buildings and had a lasting impact on the image of their hometown Kempten. Today, many of the buildings they created, often bearing panels with the inscription “Architects Heydecker”, are listed as historical monuments .

Personal

Leonhard Heydecker married Katharina Amalie Rosa "Milly" Ziesing (1868–1938), who was born in Lucerne , on April 5, 1908 in Überlingen .

On November 6, 1912 Otto Heydecker married in Braunschweig from Velpke originating Meta Velke (1888-1971). The couple lived in Kempten. The two sons Rudolf Leonhard (1919–2012) and Walter (1921–1941) emerged from this marriage.

The family grave of the Heydecker family at the Evangelical Cemetery in Kempten was designed by the brothers Leonhard and Otto Heydecker themselves. They both found their final resting place there.
