Otto P. Hornstein

Otto Paul Hornstein (born January 22, 1926 in Munich ; † March 19, 2018 in Uttenreuth ) was a German dermatologist and long-time director of the skin clinic at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg .

Life

Otto P. Hornstein studied human medicine from 1946 to 1950 at the Universities of Erlangen , Würzburg and Munich . In 1951 he received his doctorate . After further training in pathology and anatomy in Regensburg , Würzburg and Zurich and working as an assistant at the University Dermatology Clinic in Würzburg, he was admitted as a specialist in dermatology in 1958 .

Since his retirement he has been increasingly active in charity. He worked as a medical advisor in the planning and organization of a German-Indian medical charity aid organization for HIV- positive mothers and pregnant women and their children.

He was a member of the Catholic student associations KDStV Thuringia Würzburg and KDStV Tuiskonia Munich.

Scientific career

At the University of Würzburg Hornstein 1958 received the right to teach in the subject Dermatology and Venereology . After an assistantship at the University Dermatology Clinic in Bonn and a scholarship for experimental biology at the University of Uppsala ( Sweden ), he was appointed senior physician in 1963 and an adjunct professor at the University Dermatology Clinic in Düsseldorf in 1964 .

From 1967 until his retirement in 1995 he was a full professor of dermatology and venereology and director of the skin clinic at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg .

His main areas of work were histopathology , andrology , work-related dermatoses, diseases of the oral mucosa , rheumatology and gastroenterology . The Hornstein-Knickenberg Syndrome is named after him.
