Otto Reinke

Otto Ferdinand Johann Reinke (born February 2, 1852 in Naugard in Western Pomerania , † October 16, 1943 in Braunschweig ) was a German pharmacist , chemist and professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig .

Life

The son of a large slaughterhouse owner graduated from secondary school in Stettin and subsequently completed an apprenticeship as a pharmacist . Reinke studied chemistry and pharmacy in Strasbourg , Greifswald , Halle and Berlin . In 1875 he received his license to practice medicine , and in 1876 he received his doctorate from the University of Freiburg . Reinke worked at the Imperial Central drug depot in Strasbourg from 1872 to 1873 and at Schering AG in Berlin from 1873 to 1874 . From 1881 to 1882 he worked as a pharmacist in Anklam and in 1883 in the Bishop Laboratory in Berlin. From 1883 to 1899 he worked as a professor and head of department at the Institute for Fermentation Industry at the Agricultural University in Berlin .

Activity in Braunschweig

From Berlin, Reinke followed a call to the Braunschweig Technical University, where he was appointed full professor for chemical technology on April 1, 1899. From 1900 to 1924 he headed the Laboratory for Sugar, Starch and Fermentation Technology and the Laboratory for Chemical Technology II and the Agricultural and Chemical Industry. During this time, the focus of research shifted to areas related to the sugar and starch industry and the fermentation industry. Work on pure breeding of yeast from sugary wastewater, molasses , storage of alcoholic beverages, vitamins, ferments and hormones characterize Reinke's work. He worked as an expert for breweries and the sugar industry . Reinke was head of the chemical engineering department from 1904 to 1906 and head of the chemistry department from 1918 to 1920. From 1907 to 1908 he was rector and then until 1910 prorector of the TH Braunschweig. During the First World War , sterilization and dressing materials were produced in Reinke's laboratory on his initiative . Reinke retired in 1924, but held lectures until 1936.

Reinke was a member of the Association of German Chemists . In 1918 he was one of the founding members of the Braunschweigischer Hochschulbund , of which he was a member of the first elected board of directors.

Reinke last lived at Gaußstrasse 30 in Braunschweig. He died in October 1943.

Honors

Reinke was appointed Privy Councilor in 1910. In 1915 he was honored with the Officer's Cross of the Order of Henry the Lion . In 1932 he was made an honorary senator of the TH Braunschweig.
