Johann Heinrich Waldemar Otto von Morozowicz (born October 6, 1821 in Roth-Neudorf, Nimptsch district , † January 9, 1882 in Berlin ) was a Prussian lieutenant general and head of the regional administration .

Life

origin

His parents were Johann Konstantin von Morozowics (1774-1854) and his wife Emilie Charlotte, née Schneider. His father was a staff captain a. D., most recently in the 2nd West Prussian Infantry Regiment No. 7, knight of the order Pour le Mérite , tax collector in Warmbrunn and Herr auf Neudorf.

Military career

Morozowicz visited the cadet houses in Kulm and Berlin . He was then transferred to the 40th Infantry Regiment of the Prussian Army on August 15, 1838 as a Second Lieutenant with a patent from October 6, 1838 . For further training, Morozowicz was sent to the General War School for three years from October 1842 . His talent for cards was already evident here. This was followed by a command as an educator at the Berlin Cadet House. On May 1, 1850, he was assigned to the topographical department of the Great General Staff and on March 23, 1851 to the trigonometric department. There he rose to Prime Lieutenant on June 22, 1852 and was posted to the General Staff on October 5, 1854. Here he was promoted to captain on October 14, 1854 . On October 1, 1857, he started teaching geodesy at the General War Academy, where he worked until September 30, 1874. In the meantime, however, he also made a career outside of the academy. First he was promoted to major on January 18, 1859, and to lieutenant colonel on March 17, 1863. On February 14, 1865, he became a member of the Upper Military Study Commission and the Study Commission for the Cadet Corps. In addition, on April 18, 1865, he became department head of the regional triangulation (former topographical department).

During the German War , he was appointed head of department in the deputy general staff and chief of communications on June 2, 1866, and was promoted to colonel on June 2, 1866. After the campaign he received the Crown Order III on September 29, 1866 . Class. On February 16, 1867, he joined the General Staff as department head of the side budget and was placed à la suite of the General Staff. On November 13, 1868, he was appointed head of regional triangulation and in this capacity he advanced to major general on July 26, 1870 . During the Franco-Prussian War he was employed as a department head in the Deputy General Staff and was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd class with oak leaves, on May 16, 1871 .

After the war, on March 6, 1872, he also became deputy director of the life insurance institute for the army and navy. On January 23, 1875 he was promoted to chief of the state administration and on November 4, 1875 to lieutenant general with a patent from October 28, 1875. Morozowicz was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 1st Class with Oak Leaves on September 18, 1880. He died on January 9, 1882 in Berlin and was buried on January 12, 1882 in the Invalidenfriedhof .

His services include the execution of the precision leveling , the establishment of the normal height point at the observatory in Berlin and the introduction of the normal zero point as the basis for the leveling in Prussia. He also brokered the issue of a uniform map for the German Empire .

family

Morozowicz married on February 1, 1859 in Berlin Franziska Schmidt (1835-1922), a daughter of the Privy Chamber Council and general tenant of Oels Heinrich Friedrich August Schmidt. At least the later captain and military attaché at the embassy in Bern, Johann Heinrich Nikolaus (* 1862), emerged from the marriage.
