history
Owasso has existed as a settlement since 1881, at that time in the Cooweescoowee area in Cherokee Land in the Indian Territory . It was named Elm Creek , after a tributary of Bird Creek . The first settler was HT (Tole) Richardson. In June 1893, preparations began for a railway line that would lead south of Bartlesville to the cattle ranches near Bird Creek. At that time there were already several dwellings, a blacksmith's shop, and a general store in Elm Creek. Preston Ballard, the general store owner, opened a post office on February 10, 1898, becoming the settlement's first post office manager. In 1897 the Joseph T. Barnes family moved to Elm Creek, and a year later Joseph and Luther Barnes bought the forge. The first gas station was opened in 1902 by Donovan Ranta.
In 1897 the Kansas, Oklahoma Central & Southwestern Railway Company acquired rights of way approximately three miles northwest of Elm Creek and created a natural spring for the construction of a lake to provide water for the railroad line. In addition, a train station was built a mile south of the lake, which was demolished in 1942. Little by little, the residents of Elm Creek moved to the new train station. Joseph and Luther Barnes also moved the smithy, as did Preston Ballard with its post office and general store. The newly created community was also called Elm Creek after the post office moved .
The new railway line was completed in 1899 and was soon taken over by the parent company, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway . The first train reached Elm Creek on November 1, 1899. As the land around the station became known as the end of the railway line, the Osage Indian word Owasso ( end of railway or turn around ) developed into the community's new name. The name of the post office was officially changed to Owasso on January 24, 1900 . In 1905 the railway line was extended to Tulsa .
When Oklahoma officially became a state on November 16, 1907, 379 people lived in Owasso. The first newspaper was the Owasso Ledger and was first published on August 7, 1903 by UP Wardrip and cost one dollar a year. On February 6, 1905, the Pioneer Telephone and Telegraph Company was granted the right to operate the first telephone exchange. In 1924 the first water tower was built, supplied with water from the Spavinaw Water Project .
On September 28, 1972 Owasso was incorporated as City.
