Périgord (noble family)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Périgord was a family of the French nobility. It is first attested in the second half of the 10th century. "Marchio" Boson I ruled over La Marche , through his marriage to Emma von Périgord his sons also inherited the Périgord : Aldebert I and after him Boson II ruled over both counties. After the death of Boson II the land was divided: La Marche went to the son of Aldebert, the Périgord to the son of Bosons.

Boson I. is probably a son of Helie, a younger son of Hildebert, Vicomte de Limoges († 914), so would the house Perigord - as well as the house Rochechouart - a branch line of the house Limoges (which in turn as a side line of the house Toulouse seen becomes).

The county of La Marche was already lost at the end of the 11th century due to the lack of male descendants, the Périgord could be held three centuries longer, until 1399; in that year the counts Archambaud V and his son Archambaud VI. deposed, the county was confiscated by the king.

A branch of the House of Périgord is the House of Talleyrand-Périgord , whose most famous representative, Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord , received the title of prince in 1806 and the title of duke in 1808.
