The Pas ukan K h a s L aut (PASKAL) ( Eng . "Marine Special Forces") is a combat swimmer - and special unit for maritime, littoral and asymmetric warfare of the Malaysian Navy . It was set up on October 1, 1980 to protect the territorial integrity of Malaysia on the coasts and at sea. The unit is suitable for skydiving and is able to operate from the air, at sea and on the ground. With this range of uses, it is comparable to the United States Navy Seals .
history
In 1974 the naval command came to the conclusion that a maritime command unit was required as an integral part of modern naval warfare. The main task of this planned unit should be the protection of marine facilities and oil rigs. For this purpose, a group of thirty officers under the command of Captain Sutarji bin Kasmin, who retired from service at the end of his career as an admiral, was assigned to the Special Warfare Training Center in Sungai Udang, Melaka , where he was assigned to the command unit of the Army, the Gerak Khas Group , to be trained. During this multi-year phase, the personnel base for PASKAL , which was then set up in 1980, was created. These officers were also trained by experienced instructors from the US Navy Seals and the KOPASKA , the Indonesian Combat Swimmers and the British Royal Marines Commandos .
Finally, the PASKAL was officially set up on October 1st and began its service.
It was assigned to the national reinforcement program to secure the special economic zones ( Exclusive Economic Zone ) within the Malaysian waters. Shortly thereafter, it was also gradually deployed to the tasks of protecting particularly sensitive marine facilities and oil rigs.
PASKAL teams were the first military units to secure the Layang-Layang Atoll, which belongs to the internationally controversial Spratly archipelago , for the Malaysian government.
In 2007 the unit participated in the UN mission UNIFIL in Lebanon .
- In the media
- In 1998 Lieutenant Commander Ahmad Ramli Kardi, PASKAL - veteran of the first hour and member of the Malaysian free-fall skydiving team, took part in the national free-fall skydiving expedition at the North Pole .
- In the same year Lieutenant Commander Anuar was publicly awarded the Pingat Gagah Berani for his special achievements during the UN mission UNIVEM II in Angola .
- On October 1st, 2002, the new PASKAL headquarters was presented to the public.
- On August 30, 2003, the television broadcaster TV3 started the series Majalah 3 , which, in addition to PASKAL, also featured the special units Grup Gerak Khas (GGK) of the Army and PASKAU (Air Force Special Unit ).
assignment
The PASKAL can be used as a naval , airborne and ground combat unit. Their range of activities includes reconnaissance and defense against enemy intelligence, direct combat missions , jungle fighting , asymmetrical warfare, counter-terrorism and hostage rescue, as well as rescue and rescue operations .
Asymmetric warfare includes numerous covert operations in enemy-controlled or politically difficult environments, including guerrilla warfare against important targets behind enemy lines, psychological warfare and sabotage . The PASKAL is primarily designed for maritime and coastal surroundings, for undetected movement to the target through the water, raid-like operations and rapid retreat on the waterway. This is intended to give them access to objects that larger units cannot reach, or can only reach after heavy fighting.
Since the PASKAL mostly only operates in small teams, they have little firepower and can easily be worn out if they are detected by larger units. It is therefore important that they remain undetected during the mission and that their route of retreat is secured.
organization
Personnel and structure
The number of personnel in the unit is secret, but is estimated by experts at around 1,000 men, which are divided into two individual associations. The PASKAL-Unit 1 (PASKAL unit-1) is at the naval base Lumut Naval Base stationed PASKAL-Unit 2 (PASKAL unit-2) in Sri Semporna, in Semporna , Sabah . A company ( detachment ) is in the naval base Teluk Sepanggar ( Teluk Sepanggar naval base ) located.
The PASKAL is divided into several squadrons (here, as in the US armed forces, battalions ), each composed of at least three companies ( platoons ). The company consists of three platoons (here, as called for the Green Berets detachments ), each with 14 men. The smallest organizational unit is the so-called Boat Troop (boat troop ) with 7 commandos.
Basically, every squadron (every battalion) has all special skills, which means that each has experts in counterterrorism, underwater destruction and marine sniper systems.
In addition, the unit has its own intelligence service component for reconnaissance, counter-espionage and telecommunications , the so-called Combat Intelligence Team (Malay: Tim Risk Gempur, German: Combat Intelligence Service Group) (TRG).
