Panagiotis Kanellopoulos

Panagiotis Kanellopoulos ( Greek Παναγιώτης Κανελλόπουλος , born December 13, 1902 in Patras ; † September 11, 1986 in Athens ) was a Greek sociologist, historical philosopher, legal scholar, poet, politician and two-time prime minister.

Scientific career

Kanellopoulos studied sociology and law at the University of Athens , the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg and the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich .

During his life he wrote numerous works on the history of ideas, sociology, philosophy, law and politics. He also published literary prose and poetry. His book "I was Born in 1402" won the literary prize of the Academy of Athens .

Political career

Metaxas dictatorship and World War II

A staunch Republican , he founded the National Unionist Party in 1935. After the establishment of the dictatorship by Colonel Ioannis Metaxas on April 13, 1936, he went into exile until the dictator's death on January 29, 1941 . During the Second World War he organized resistance groups on the border with Albania . In 1942 he followed the government into exile in Cairo and became Minister of Defense in the Tsouderos cabinet . After clashes with royalist officers, he left again in March 1943. From April 1944 to January 1945 he was Minister of Reconstruction in the cabinet of Georgios Papandreou . In October 1944 he returned to Greece with the government in exile.

Prime Minister 1945 and ministerial offices

From November 1 to 22, 1945, he was Prime Minister and Foreign Minister at the same time for the first time. In 1946 he was elected a member of the National Assembly (Voulí ton Ellínon) , where he represented the constituency of Patras . In the following years he was minister several times: in 1947 he was aviation minister, then from June 1949 to January 1950 he was minister of war in the cabinet of Alexandros Diomidis . In 1950 he was Deputy Prime Minister.

In the government of Marshal Alexandros Papagos he was Minister for National Defense from November 1952 to October 1955 and also Deputy Prime Minister from 1954 to 1955. After the death of Marshal Papagos, he joined Konstantinos Karamanlis's National Radical Union (ERE) . In the governments of Karamanlis he was again Deputy Prime Minister from 1959 to 1963. On July 9, 1961, he signed an association agreement between Greece and the European Communities during a state visit by German Vice Chancellor Ludwig Erhard in Athens .

After the defeat of the ERE in the election to the National Assembly in November 1963, he became chairman of the ERE after the previous party chairman Karamanlis had gone into exile in Paris .

Prime Minister and Colonel coup in 1967

When the ERE withdrew its support to the government of Prime Minister Ioannis Paraskevopoulos on April 3, 1967 , he finally became Prime Minister himself for the second time. However, he was overthrown 18 days later by Colonel Georgios Papadopoulos' putsch on April 21, 1967. Kanellopoulos was the last parliamentary confirmed Prime Minister before the end of the military dictatorship in July 1974.

Restoration of Democracy 1974

In 1974 he was re-elected to the National Assembly. In 1975 he ran unsuccessfully against Konstantinos Tsatsos for the office of President of the 2nd Republic . He then withdrew from political life. A special stamp was issued for his 95th birthday in 1997 and the Hellenic Leadership Institute held a ceremony on his 100th birthday in 2002.
