Paulo Roberto "Paolo" Rink (born February 21, 1973 in Curitiba , Brazil ) is a former German-Brazilian soccer player and current local politician in his native city. There he was a member of the local organizing committee for the 2014 World Cup .

Career

Club (as a player)

Rink began his professional career in 1991 in his Brazilian homeland at Atlético Mineiro . There he made his professional debut and scored his first professional goal in the same year. The following year, the attacker moved to the city of Curitiba to his youth club Athletico Paranaense .

Bayer Leverkusen

In 1997, Rink was signed by Bayer 04 Leverkusen . Already in the first year he prevailed and formed a successful attack with Ulf Kirsten , who together scored over 30 goals in the 1997/98 season. He himself scored nine goals in 29 games.

The striker made his debut in the Bundesliga on the first day of the 1997/98 season, when he came on as a substitute for Jens Nowotny in the 74th minute of the game against FC Schalke 04 . Three game days later Rink scored his first professional goal in Germany on August 23, 1997 in a 6-1 win against Karlsruher SC . Under coach Christoph Daum , Rink was mainly used as a joker. During the entire season he was substituted on or off a total of 20 times. He scored five goals as a substitute. In the following year, the striker was ousted by Erik Meijer and came on only eighteen missions, where he scored five. In order to be able to give him more match practice again, Leverkusen loaned Rink to FC Santos for half a year in the summer of 1999 ; Rink himself had asked for this loan deal. After returning to Leverkusen in winter, he made a convincing comeback and Rink scored ten goals in 16 games.

1. FC Nürnberg and Energie Cottbus

He could not continue these services for the following season, so that he was sold to 1. FC Nürnberg shortly after the start of the 2001/02 season . There he was together with Jacek Krzynówek and Marek Nikl the best assists of the Franks. Nevertheless, they separated a year later and the Brazilian signed with Energie Cottbus . But here, too, the offensive player fell short of his expectations, Rink played 13 games (3 goals) and after one season the contract was terminated by mutual agreement.

Between Cyprus, the Netherlands and South Korea

While Cottbus was relegated, Rink moved to Cyprus as he was signed by Olympiacos Nicosia . There he developed into a goal guarantor again - Rink scored 9 goals in 14 games - and the Dutch first division club Vitesse Arnheim secured the attacker's services in the winter . This engagement ended in the summer and Rink joined the South Korean team Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors , only to move back to Olympiakos in Cyprus six months later. In the winter of 2005/06, the former Bundesliga player moved within the league to Omonia Nicosia . Six months later, Rink completed his last professional season with the Brazilian first division club Athletico Paranaense .

On May 24, 2007 he ended his career as an active player with a benefit game in Curitiba .

Association (as manager)

At his last club, Athletico Paranaense, he became manager of the football department in May 2011.

National team

Rink was able to apply for German citizenship because his great-grandfather emigrated from Heidelberg to Brazil in 1904 . For the German national soccer team , Rink played a total of 13 times between 1998 and 2000 and was on the national team for the 1999 Confederations Cup and the 2000 European Soccer Championship . He made his international debut on September 2, 1998 against Malta when he came on for Olaf Marschall on the 63rd minute . While Rink only made two substitutions at the Confederations Cup 99, a year later he was the only DFB attacker under Erich Ribbeck who was used in all preliminary round matches during the EM . As the bottom of the table in Group 1, the German team was disappointedly eliminated from the competition.

On September 2, 2000 Rink completed his last game for Germany. In the World Cup qualifier against Greece, he was substituted on for Alexander Zickler 20 minutes before the end .

Paulo Rink was never able to assert himself in the national team; In only two games he was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes.

Curitiba

Rink lives in Curitiba again today. In the local elections in 2012, he successfully ran for the Partido Popular Socialista (PPS) with 5,625 votes to be a member of the Câmara municipal de Curitiba.

In Curitiba he set up a foundation “which mainly looks after children from socially disadvantaged backgrounds. Part of it takes place in a soccer academy, in which 700 children cavort ”.
