Paranoya is a punk band that originally comes from Hamm in North Rhine-Westphalia . Musically they play a very " progressive " form of punk , which is influenced by other styles of music . For a while they performed with the slogan “ Minimalism as Opportunity” and self-ironically describe their music as “Technical Death Punk”.

history

The 1990s

The band was founded in Hamm (Wiescherhöfen) in 1994 by Hendrik Splie, Thorsten Grams, Daniel "Zwiebel" Jacobs and Jörg H. In the beginning they called themselves "The Pain", but never appeared under that name. In 1996 the first demo tape ( 1996 ) appeared under the band name Paranoya, which was well received in the local punk scene. During the recording for this, Jörg H. left the band, so that the first appearances in youth centers in the area of Hamm took place without a bassist. In autumn 1996 Lars W. joined the band as the new bass player.

The second demo tape followed in 1997 ( manipulation ). Because of this tape, which also met with a predominantly positive response outside of North Rhine-Westphalia, the band was able to play in the opening act for Bash and Popperklopper and also appeared in the opening act of the English punk bands Contempt and Sick on the Bus.

In 1998 the next demo tape ( Paranoya ) followed, which gave the band further appearances with well-known scene bands such as May 1, 87 , The Vageenas and Pestpox . Due to the secret appearance Paranoya played in the opening act of the band Substandard from England in the autonomous center of Mülheim . In the same year it appeared on Harmonyrec. a vinyl sampler ( prosperity neurosis ) with Recharge , Sick on the Bus, Contempt, Dekadenz and others, the proceeds of which were donated to homeless organizations. As one of the few bands without a record deal, Paranoya was represented there with two songs. This sampler was not only sold in Germany but across Europe in the DIY punk scene.

This was followed by the first official release of a 7 "vinyl EP ( Out ) with 5 tracks from the demo ( Paranoya ) on Na Und ?! Records. The EP was released in an edition of 500 copies and even made it across the Atlantic, where it was in the USA at Maximumrocknroll was reviewed:

"Five songs from this West German Band with sort of a CHAOS UK-like style, but with a much tougher edge to it. Two songs are in English, but the rest is in German. My favorite song starts off as a German ballad before picking up the peace. This is a pretty good 7 ". These guys have really ugly punk rock friends tough. The inside cover is sick. (SR)"

Further appearances with Rasta Knast , District, Bad News etc. followed and increased the band's profile within the DIY punkscene. 1999 appeared on Na Und ?! Records of the 7 "vinyl sampler Human Dust Vol. 1 , on which Paranoya were represented with Not Enough, Mass Murders and Antidote . Drummer Thorsten Grams (at this time also a singer) sings on Unimportant , which was also released by Paranoya Cuatro X ) while the others did the backing vocals .

2000 to 2010

In July 2000 the band went to the studio to record new material. Through the concerts played in spring 2000 with Not Enough and the Krombacher Kellerkinder, who released their albums on Horror Business Records, the label became aware of the band. A cooperation was agreed with Na Und ?! Records, for the release of an album on CD and vinyl. The CD should be released by Horror Business Records and the vinyl version by Na Und ?! Records. However, so what ?! Records so that the new album No One was released on CD by Horror Business Records. Horror Business Records took over the marketing of the album. Musically, Paranoya's album is somewhere between hardcore and punk. While three-chord punk dominated the band's demos, various hardcore and light metal borrowings can be heard on this long player. In the reviews of various fanzines, the comparison with Rawside was often cited. Through Horror Business Records, the band also received reviews from various print media such as Ox , Plastic Bomb and Rock Hard .

The Coolibri and the Westfälische Anzeiger also wrote about the band. While they at Plastic Bomb were well reviewed and smaller fanzines that had Ox more reserved and the Rock Hard fell No One by. This was followed by further appearances with Rantanplan , Scattergun , Pascow , as well as cross-scene gigs with Delirious , Cuatro X , etc. a. Paranoya also contributed songs to various samplers and they played concerts all over Germany. A new album was also being planned, but came to a standstill due to differences within the band, whereupon Lars W. left the band in 2004. Paranoya had new material for an album together, but were looking for a new bassist. For the new album, Marco Schuster, who already played bass with Cuatro X, was supposed to take over the part as studio bassist. More came out of the short-term engagement in 2004 and Marco Schuster has been a permanent member of the band ever since.

In 2004 the band went back to the studio to record the new album Atmen , but the sound quality was not convincing, so this demo was not released. In order not to disappear completely from the scene, the band released a live CD of their own in 2005 and continued to play live.

In 2007 they made the second attempt to record the album Atmen . They changed the studio and went to the recording studio Bunkeretage 2.eV in Duisburg. In contrast to the first version of Atmen , this album was then released by Major Threat (sub-label of Horror Business Records), Unkrautrec. and the band's own label Pararec. Released on vinyl and CD in 2008. Musically, the album Atmen is the band's most varied so far, while the previous album was heavily influenced by hardcore punk with smaller excursions into quiet parts, with fast and mid-tempo songs alternating with Atmen . They make use of the various punk sub-genres as well as light rockabilly and metal borrowings. While there were also many English lyrics on the previous album, there are only two songs in English on the album Atmen . The German lyrics paint a rather gloomy picture and are partly autobiographical as well as socially critical, a basic lyrical attitude of the band.

The new album was well received within the scene, apart from the English titles. Thanks to the DIY scene, the album also made it back to the USA, Switzerland, Poland, England and the like. a. and was played there by various independent radios. With the new album in his back, Paranoya then played numerous concerts, including with Real McKenzies , Klasse Kriminale , Supabond and Oi Polloi . The band described the performance with the Canadian punk band DOA as a highlight

2011 until today

In 2011 there were further appearances with well-known bands such as Third Choice , Supabond , Cut my Skin and BicahunaS. During this time, the band was preparing to record new material. Again we went to the recording studio Bunkeretage 2.eV in Duisburg and the 7 "vinyl EP Observer was recorded. This was then released in 2012 by Major Threat and Pararec. An MP3 download of the single was also possible, which the Plastic Bomb for The band set up. The release features four pieces by the band. While the A-side sounds more experimental, the B-side is characterized by the classic punk rock of the 77/78. The opener observer , sung by Daniel "Zwiebel" Jacobs , manages without a chorus and the piece of art contains a classic rockabilly part with a harmonium sound in the background within the choppy guitar sequences . Although there is an English song title with Uncertain on the B-side, only the chorus is in English. The song , which could already be heard on the album No One , has been re-recorded and provided with new lyrics. Lyrically, the EP Observer is an unwanted concept album with the New media theme.

“The EP was created while working on a new album. We just wanted to push a record forward, but it wasn't meant to be a concept record. It's all more of a coincidence "

The reviews of the record were divided. While some punk zines reacted very positively to the mixing of different styles and the development of the band, the other zines were more of a deterrent. This record also got abroad through the DIY scene, such as the USA, England, Switzerland, Poland, Ukraine, Sweden etc. This was also helped by the Pararec label, which was founded as a joke. as an online label. This enabled Paranoya not only to publish the EP Observer on the popular music platforms on the Internet, but also the previous albums Atmen and No One .

In 2013 Paranoya was on the road with the new EP in the republic and played as support for Jaya the Cat , as well as together with the Dödelhaien and TZN Xenna from Poland.

In spring 2014 Paranoya were back in the recording studio Bunkeretage 2 eV in Duisburg to record the next album, which was released in September 2015 under the name Fragments . The recording sessions for the album Fragments resulted in two additional songs, which were released in March 2017 as a 7 "vinyl single under the title Demons . In particular, the title track deviates significantly from the previous work of the band, compositionally and vocally with influences from country and folk On December 30th, 2017 Paranoya played on Punk im Pott with big names in the scene like Third Choice and Bone Factory .

Thorsten Grams left the band in autumn 2018 and was replaced by Ben Postler on drums before the turn of the year.

In autumn 2019 there was another change, Peter Hillebrand followed Marco Schuster on bass.
