The Urpay district is located in the Pataz Province in the La Libertad region in western Peru . The district has an area of ​​393 km². The 2017 census counted 8,937 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 5195, in 2007 it was 7410. The administrative seat of the district is the small town of Pataz, 2620  m high, with 1723 inhabitants (as of 2017). Pataz is 65 km north-northwest of the provincial capital Tayabamba .

Geographical location

The district of Pataz is located on the western flank of the Peruvian Central Cordillera in the far north of the province of Pataz. The Río Marañón flows north along the western district boundary. In the south, its tributary Quebrada Carrizal forms the district boundary, in the north the river Río Lavasen.

The Pataz district is bordered to the south by the district Pias , on the west by the districts Cochorco and Sartimbamba (both in the province Sánchez Carrión ), to the north by the district Condormarca ( Bolívar Province ) and to the east by the district Huicungo ( province of Mariscal Cáceres ) .
