Patrick Guinand graduated from the Université de Bourgogne in Dijon in 1969 with a degree in economics (macroeconomics), and in 1971 with a degree in literary studies with a degree in New Philology (Lettres Modernes). From 1965 to 1970 he was the leading actor in the university theater group, where he presented his first productions. This was followed by engagements as an actor at the Théâtre de Bourgogne in Beaune and Dijon and at the Théâtre National de Strasbourg.

In 1972 Patrick Guinand founded his own theater group Le Théâtre du Double in Paris . After working with Roger Blin in Paris, Strasbourg and Lebanon, he made the decision to direct from now on. In 1975 he directed a dramatization of Le Supplément au Voyage de Bougainville ( addendum to Bougainville's journey ) by Denis Diderot at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale in Paris . This production toured Great Britain in 1976, Germany in 1977 (including as a guest performance at the Berlin Schillertheater), and in 1978 through Canada and the USA.

In 1979, at the Festival International d'Art Lyrique d'Aix-en-Provence, his first opera direction followed: Porporino (an adaptation of the novel by Dominique Fernandez with compositions for the castrati of the 18th century by Niccolò Jommelli , Tommaso Traetta , Johann Adolph Hasse , Nicola Antonio Porpora , Alessandro Scarlatti , Leonardo Leo and Francesco Durante ).

In 1981 Patrick Guinand was appointed artistic director of the Jeune Théâtre National in Paris. His productions have taken him to the Théâtre National de l'Odéon , the Center Georges-Pompidou and the Comédie-Française in Paris, the Montpellier Opera, the Festival d'Avignon and the Festival Musica in Strasbourg.

A meeting with Thomas Bernhard on his square courtyard in Ohlsdorf in 1985 resulted in Patrick Guinand staging the prose text of Wittgenstein's nephew as a play: Le Neveu de Wittgenstein was born in 1991 with Jean-Marc Bory at the Parisian Maison des Arts et de la Culture de Créteil first performed, the Italian premiere took place as Il Nipote di Wittgenstein in 1992 at the Teatro Eliseo in Rome with Umberto Orsini, the German-language premiere took place in 2001 with Toni Böhm at the Volkstheater Vienna . At the Teatro Eliseo, Patrick Guinand staged after the success of Il Nipote di Wittgenstein (revivals in Modena 2001, Milan 2002, Palermo 2004, Rome 2007 and around 250 performances throughout Italy; Premio Ubu 2002, Top Ten 2007 in Corriere della Sera ) in 1996 the European premiere of Terrence McNally's Master Class ( master class ) with Rossella Falk as Maria Callas , which then toured Italy with 220 performances.
