Paul Francis Duffy

Paul Francis Duffy OMI (born July 25, 1932 in Norwood , Massachusetts , † August 23, 2011 in San Antonio , Texas ) was an American religious and Roman Catholic bishop of Mongu .

Life

Paul Francis Duffy joined the Order of the Oblates after attending school in Boston in 1952 and was ordained priestly on December 22, 1962 in San Antonio by Bishop Stephen A. Levin . Since 1984 he has been active in Zambia at the invitation of the national bishops' conference , including pastor in Lukulu and Kalabo .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Mongu on June 14, 1997 . The Apostolic Pro-Nuncio in Malawi and Apostolic Nuncio in Zambia , Giuseppe Leanza , donated him episcopal consecration on August 31, 1997 ; Co- consecrators were Raymond Mpezele , Bishop of Livingstone , and Medardo Joseph Mazombwe , Archbishop of Lusaka . He was a member of the Association of Bishops' Conferences of East Africa .

Duffy was committed to the more than 26 different tribes in Zambia's western province , one of the poorest regions in the world, and was considered to be its mouthpiece. In 2010 he was the victim of public allegations because of his outright appeals for help.

On February 15, 2011, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related resignation, which Duffy had already made in 2007 after reaching the age of 75. At the time he was the oldest officiating bishop in all of Africa . He died of complications from leukemia. The President of Zambia, Rupiah Banda, expressed his gratitude in an obituary for the active role Duffy would have played in society.
