The Paul Gauguin is a cruise ship owned by the Paul Gauguin Cruises shipping company.

history

The ship was built in 1997 under the hull number G31 at the French shipyard Chantiers de l'Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire . The keel was laid on November 27, 1995, the launch on April 25, 1996. The ship was completed on December 1, 1997. The ship is named after the French painter Eugène Henri Paul Gauguin , who lived part of his life in French Polynesia and died in 1903 on Hiva Oa , an island in the Marquesas Islands. It started sailing under the French flag . Home port was Mata Utu .

The ship was built for Société Services et Transports to be used for cruises from Papeete . The US shipping company Radisson Seven Seas Cruises was supposed to be responsible for hotel operations on board, but they chartered the ship on a long-term basis before it was commissioned and sold cruises under its own name. Radisson Seven Seas Cruises mainly used the ship for one-week cruises from Papeete to the island world of the Society Islands . Sometimes longer cruises to Fiji and the Marquesas Islands were offered.

In 2004, the ship was sold by Société Services et Transports to Grand Circle Travel and Vantage Deluxe World Travel, who founded Paul Gauguin Shipping to operate the ship. The ship previously operated under the French flag came under the flag of the Bahamas . Initially, it was planned that Radisson Seven Seas Cruises would also use the ship in South America , Antarctica , the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea from 2006 . However, this did not materialize.

In 2006, Radisson Seven Seas Cruises renamed Regent Seven Seas Cruises. In 2008 the company was acquired by Prestige Cruise Holdings, which was also the parent company of Oceania Cruises. The charter, which had previously been extended several times, finally expired in January 2010.

Paul Gauguin Cruises had already been sold to Pacific Beachcomber, a company specializing in French Polynesia, before the charter expired in August 2009. The ship continued to be used by Paul Gauguin Cruises for cruises in the South Pacific from 2010 .

At the beginning of 2012 the ship was overhauled and modernized. Among other things, the number of passenger cabins was increased to 166.

In 2019 Paul Gauguin Cruises was taken over by the French cruise operator Compagnie du Ponant . In May 2020, the ship was modernized again, including converting several cabins on deck 7. This reduced the number of passenger cabins to 159, in which 318 passengers can be accommodated. In July 2020 the ship was brought back under the French flag.

The ship has been used for cruises in the South Pacific since it was commissioned. It mainly operates from Tahiti on one-week cruises to the island world of the Society Islands and sometimes also on longer cruises to the Cook Islands , the Marquesas, the Tuamotu Archipelago and Fiji.

Technical data and equipment

The ship is powered by diesel-electric technology . The electric drive motors of CGE Alsthom, each with 4,500  kW power act on two fixed-pitch propellers . A total of four diesel generator sets are available to generate electricity for the drive motors and for on-board operation. The generators are of MAN - diesel driven. Two four-stroke - six-cylinder diesel engines of the type MAN 6L32, each with 2,536 kW driving two generators each with 3170  kVA apparent power , two four-stroke nine-cylinder engines of the type MAN 9L32, each with 3,800 kW driving two generators each with 4750 kVA apparent power. In addition, an emergency generator with 413 kVA apparent power was installed, which is driven by a diesel engine with 330 kW output. The ship is equipped with a bow and a stern thruster.

The ship has nine decks. Seven of the decks, deck 3 to deck 9, are accessible to passengers. There are 159 passenger cabins on board. All cabins are outside cabins, 115 with their own balcony. There are several restaurants and bars on board, a salon with a stage, a boutique, a spa and fitness area and a swimming pool. At the stern of the ship there is a water sports platform that is integrated into the hull and can be folded down and used for various water sports. The bridge is on deck 7.

At the back two cranes are installed, which carried there dinghies or containers can be moved.

The ship is equipped with two fin stabilizers .

Others

The ship was a motif on postage stamps, for example in French Polynesia in 2007 and in Togo in 2013 .
