Paul Vitzthum von Eckstädt

Paul Hermann Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt (* July 5, 1850 in Oberlichtenau , † August 5, 1911 in Dresden ) was a Saxon general of the infantry and temporarily chief of the general staff of the Saxon Army .

Life

Paul was the eldest son of Hermann Graf Vitzthum von Eckstädt (1821-1892) and his wife Paula, née von Trattlau (* 1825). His father was a royal Saxon Real Privy Councilor and Lord Chamberlain.

Vitzthum studied law at the Universities of Göttingen and Leipzig and became a member of the Corps Saxonia in Göttingen . In July 1870 he entered the Saxon military service and took part in the campaign against France as a sergeant and ensign . In July 1871 he became a lieutenant in the 1st Leib Grenadier Regiment No. 100 , in June 1883 a captain in the General Staff and at Easter 1884 a General Staff Officer in the 1st Division No. 24 in Leipzig . In 1890 he was transferred to the General Staff in Dresden as a major . From 1893 to 1899 Vitzthum was military representative in Berlin and adjutant wing of King Albert of Saxony . During this time he was promoted to lieutenant colonel in 1894 and to colonel in 1897 . In 1899 he became commander of the 2nd Grenadier Regiment "Kaiser Wilhelm, King of Prussia" No. 101 , in 1901 chief of the Army General Staff, then major general and in September 1902 commander of the 64th Infantry Brigade in 3rd Division No. 32 . In 1904 he became lieutenant general and commander of 1st Division No. 23 .

Vitzthum was put up for disposition as general of the infantry in 1908 and lived in Dresden from 1909.
