Hans Paul Robert Ewald von Kleist (born April 1, 1846 in Erfurt , † December 26, 1926 in Potsdam ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

Paul belonged to the Muttrin line - ladies of his very nobility, originally Pomeranian , who were widespread in Prussia . He was the son of the royal Prussian forest master Ewald von Kleist (1817-1896) and his wife Caroline Thomas, née von Wensoe (1819-1903).

Military career

Kleist was brought up in the family home. He attended high schools in Frankfurt (Oder) , Elbing and Königsberg . From 1861 he graduated from the cadet schools in Wahlstatt and Berlin . Subsequently, on April 9, 1864, Kleist was transferred to the Leib-Grenadier-Regiment (1st Brandenburgisches) No. 8 of the Prussian Army in Frankfurt (Oder) as a characterized Portepeefähnrich . With his regiment he was forwarded to Schleswig-Holstein because of the war against Denmark . In mid-December 1864 he received the patent for this rank and was promoted to second lieutenant on October 11, 1865 .

As such, Kleist took part in the battles at Gitschin and Königgrätz in 1866 during the war against Austria . After the peace agreement his transfer was followed on 30 October 1866 after Aurich in the Infantry Regiment. 78 . With this regiment he went to war against France in 1870 . He took part in the battle of Mars-la-Tour , was slightly wounded by a shot in the thigh near Gravelotte and was awarded the Iron Cross, 2nd class. After his recovery he acted from November 28, 1870 as adjutant of the 1st battalion and took part in the fighting at Beaune-la-Rolande , Beaugency , Tours and Le Mans .

After the Peace of Frankfurt on October 14, 1871 , Kleist was promoted to Prime Lieutenant, on August 13, 1873, Kleist was commanded for one year to serve with the Hanoverian Jäger Battalion No. 10 . On July 8, 1875 he was transferred to the 4th Guards Regiment on foot and in April 1877 promoted to captain to company commander. In 1893 he joined the regimental staff as a lieutenant colonel . In 1898 he was promoted to colonel and appointed commander of the Leib Grenadier Regiment "King Friedrich Wilhelm III." (1st Brandenburg) No. 8 in Frankfurt (Oder). On May 22, 1900, he took command of the 22nd Infantry Brigade in Wroclaw while being promoted to major general . With the approval of his resignation letter, Kleist was put up for disposition on March 22, 1903 . In 1904 he was given the character of Lieutenant General.

Kleist was a legal knight of the Order of St. John .

family

Since February 19, 1884 he was married to Marie Freiin von Riese-Stallburg (1863-1951). The marriage resulted in two sons and a daughter.
