Pembroke is a city and also the county seat of Bryan County in the US state of Georgia with 2196 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Pembroke is about 50 km west of Savannah and about 330 km southeast of Atlanta .

history

Pembroke was founded in 1892 and was at that time largely characterized by the railway line running here and by its function as a transshipment point for turpentine . It was named after Pembroke Whitfield Williams, who lived in the city when it was founded. In 1905 the place became its own municipality . The county seat was in Clyde prior to 1935 when a vote set Pembroke as the new seat. The county began its work in Pembroke with the first session of the county commission on February 15, 1937.

On April 8, 1998, parts of the city fell victim to a tornado.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 2196 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 834 inhabited households, which gives an average of 2.63 people per household. There are a total of 1006 households.

69.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring) with an average size of 3.20 people. There were children under the age of 18 in 37.4% of all households and persons aged 65 and over in 27.3% of all households.

29.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 19.0% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 36 years. 47.4% of the population were male and 52.6% were female.

60.5% of the population identified themselves as whites , 34.6% as African-Americans , 0.5% as Indians, and 1.3% as Asian Americans . 2.0% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.2% to several ethnic groups. 3.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

The average annual income per household was 38,250 USD , while 26.1% of the population lived below the poverty line.

The Bryan County Courthouse and the Pembroke Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Pembroke is crossed by US Highway 280 and Georgia State Routes 67 and 119 . The nearest airport is Savannah Airport (around 50 km east).

The crime rate in 2010 was 151 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There were three assaults, 16 break-ins, 48 ​​thefts and three car thefts.

Pembroke is the birthplace of jazz musician Jabbo Smith (1908–1991).
