action

The witch Hildegard has been keeping Pepolino's grandfather in a dungeon for thirteen years. When he finally tells her where the treasure map is that she wants from him, she sends the pirate trio Redbart, Holzbein and Glasauge to get the map. After all, it is about gold and jewelery of immeasurable value: the dowry of the Queen of Sheba .

Pepolino and his dog Jacob want to catch fish for lunch, but because of all the singing he couldn't get around. So he takes a detour through the city and enchants people with his singing. He hopes to get money to buy fish, but a girl just throws him a rose. The grandmother is disappointed that Pepolino is not bringing any fish and would rather be a trobador than a pirate. When two ships arrive in port, his grandfather's ship, who has been missing since his last voyage, is surprisingly there. Pepolino's grandmother immediately sends the boy to the harbor so that he can release the "Granny Maria". Pepolino pays the harbor master the money and looks around the old ship. Suddenly he hears a voice: it is the Don Poco parrot. He tells him about the last battle his grandfather fought. They wanted the treasure map that his grandfather is supposed to have of the treasure of the Queen of Sheba, but he would not have given it to them.

Captain Babaluk, who towed the "Granny Maria" with his "Seacat", went to see Pepolino's grandmother. He too desperately wants the treasure map from her, which she refuses. He secretly searches the whole house. When she catches him doing it, he incapacitates her and disappears. When the pirate trio Red Beard, Holzbein and Glasauge appear, the grandmother claims that Pepolino has the card. So she gets rid of the three of them quickly. When Pepolino returns home with Jacob and finds his grandmother tied up, he is furious. The grandmother reports that the captain Babaluk stole her grandfather's treasure map and Pepolino immediately rushes off to fetch it back. But the grandmother says what should she do with a scrap of paper, he should bring her the whole treasure right away. Since Babaluk has already sailed with the "Seacat", Pepolino simply takes the "Granny Maria" and sails after him. His crew consists of his loyal dog Jacob, the parrot Don Poco and the ship's rat Emil.

Captain Babaluk is now studying the treasure map and is horrified to discover that he has to sail to an area known as the "navel of the devil", from where no one is said to have come back alive and where the witch Hildegard is wreaking havoc. Pepolino follows the captain's ship and passes the time on the voyage with singing. This is heard by the mermaid Mora, who is so delighted with it that she takes the boy into her heart. When Pepolino sees her, he immediately falls in love.

When Pepolino finally catches up with the "Seacat", he sends the rat Emil over to get the card back. Emil finds the captain sleeping, but he has his fat cat Babette with him, who is now hunting the rat. But Emil manages to get back to the "Granny Maria" with the card. When Babaluk notices the theft, he in turn rows to Pepolino's ship and demands the treasure map back. Since he threatens to kill Jacob, the boy gives him the card again. Little does Pepolino suspect that he is closer to the treasure than he thinks and that he doesn't even need the card. Mora could lead him to him, but she distances herself when she learns that Pepolino - just like everyone she knows - is supposedly only interested in gold.

Meanwhile, the red beard, wooden leg and glass eye of the "Granny Maria" are right on the heels and surprised that they can almost see their home rock in front of their eyes. Your ship is the first to encounter the "Seacat", which you fire with her cannon and cause it to sink. Shipwrecked captain Babaluk and Babette let themselves be taken on the "Granny Maria" and in return they sink the ship of the pirate trio. When they arrive on Treasure Island, Pepolino and Babaluk go in search of the treasure, but Red Beard, Holzbein and Glass Eye also follow them. Babaluk goes straight to Hildegard's castle without knowing it and Pepolino has to fight the three pursuers alone. The witch takes him prisoner in the end and he meets his grandfather, who was believed to be dead, in the dungeon. Don Poco, who followed the boy, wants to help them escape. He meets Mora, who does her part when she learns from Poco that Pepolino is not interested in the treasure, but only in her. With the trident of her father Neptune , she creates a spring tide that brings down the entire Witch Mountain and makes the dungeon so full of water that the prisoners can swim to a window and flee. Happy they get to the "Granny Maria" and sail back home. On the way, Pepolino meets Mora again, who this time follows her underwater and discovers the treasure in a sunken ship. However, he only takes a small box of the gold with him. On arrival at home, Pepolino's grandmother is overjoyed to have her loved ones back with her. But Pepolino only delivers the treasure chest for his grandmother and sails back to Mora.

Reviews

Günter H.Jekubzik at Filmtabs.de says: “The cartoon for children was made with European craftsmanship, which can also be seen in it. The figures are very original, from the talking parrot and the loyal ship rate to the three pirates. Only the hero Pepolino remains a little pale with this children's entertainment from the age of six. "

The critics at Loewen-kids.de come to the conclusion: "A cartoon film made with comparatively modest effort, which is characterized by an imaginative script and lovable characters."

At the 1996 Children's Film Festival in Munich, children were also allowed to judge the film. Christiane and Julia, both 12 years old, said: “The film is well made, but a bit unreal! I think the film is good because even smaller children can understand it. The film is also good because Pepolino can take care of himself and because he goes his own way. The film is also funny and imaginative in some places. I think Pepolino's songs are very good! Overall, we liked the film a lot, but it's more for younger people. "
