Peter Herrmann (born May 18, 1937 in Großschönau ) is a German painter .

biography

Herrmann was born in Großschönau near Zittau and grew up in Breslau and Dresden . From 1951 he did an apprenticeship as a chemigrapher at the newly founded Dresden Sachsen-Verlag , his father was also a chemigrapher. In Dresden he worked in this profession until 1970. From 1953/54 he trained as an artist at the Volkshochschule Dresden with Jürgen Böttcher (Strawalde) . His classmates and friends are Winfried Dierske , Peter Graf , Ralf Winkler (A. R. Penck) and Peter Makolies . Jürgen Böttcher (Strawalde) portrayed him, Peter Graf and Peter Makolies in his 1961 short documentary Three of Many . The shooting ended one day before August 13, 1961, after which the film was banned in the GDR. From 1971 he worked as a freelance painter. He belonged to the Leonhardi Museum working group , which initiated unconventional exhibitions. Along with Eberhard Göschel , Jochen Lorenz , Bernhard Theilmann and A. R. Penck 1978 he founded the Obergraben 9 in Dresden-Neustadt , the upper grave press with, which saw itself as publishing, gallery and artists' association. Peter Herrmann made a woodcut portfolio of poems by Michael Wüstefeld there. From 1971 he belonged to the artist group Lücke . He left the GDR in 1984 , moved to Hamburg and has lived in Berlin since 1986 . His studio is in Wedding .

Permanently exhibited works by Peter Herrmann can be found in the Berlinische Galerie , the Neue Meister gallery of the Dresden State Art Collections , the Ludwig Museum in Cologne and the Young Art Museum in Frankfurt (Oder) .

He formed a studio community with the sculptor Hans Scheib , which resulted in three well-known exhibitions. The exhibition Bleu de Prusse was even shown in 1989 at the Goethe Institute in Paris . The Golden Pot was exhibited in 1995 in the octagon of the former Saxon Art Association on Brühl's Terrace. In 2002 the Bonn headquarters of the German Research Foundation showed Peter Herrmann - Hans Scheib, an overview .

Peter Herrmann was awarded the Villa Romana Prize ( Florence ) in 1998; In 2001 he received the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting.
