Peter Hermann Jung (born April 2, 1955 in Wuppertal ) is a German politician ( CDU ). From 2004 to 2015 he was Lord Mayor of the North Rhine-Westphalian city ​​of Wuppertal in the Bergisches Land .

Life

After graduating from the Wilhelm-Dörpfeld-Gymnasium , he began training as a bank clerk at Deutsche Bank AG in Remscheid , and then studied business administration at the EBS Business School in Oestrich-Winkel . From 1981 until his election as Lord Mayor in 2004, Peter Jung worked in the family business P. Hermann Jung KG in Wuppertal-Cronenberg . He is married with two grown children and became a grandfather in 2016.

Jung has been a member of the CDU since 1972 and a board member of the CDU in the Cronenberg district since 1997. In 1999 he became a member of the district board of the CDU Wuppertal and in September 2001 also a district board member of the medium-sized business association of the CDU Wuppertal. In the local elections in September 1999, Jung was elected to the city council of Wuppertal, where he was elected First Mayor of the city of Wuppertal in June 2000. In October 2004, Jung was elected Lord Mayor of the City of Wuppertal with 64.72% of the vote in the runoff election, replacing Hans Kremendahl ( SPD ).

For the local elections on August 30, 2009, Peter Jung was re-elected as candidate for mayor of the CDU Wuppertal with 97.6% at a general meeting. Peter Jung names the fields “culture and urban development”, “education” and “economy and work” as the focal points of his political work as Lord Mayor.

On August 30, 2009, Peter Jung was confirmed as Lord Mayor of Wuppertal with 47.63% and asserted himself against the candidate of the SPD, Dietmar Bell (30.76%).

In the runoff election for the mayor election on September 27, 2015, Peter Jung lost 40.30% to the challenger Andreas Mucke from the SPD (59.70%). On the evening of the election, he announced that he would withdraw from local politics after the result was almost certain.

Honors

The Bergische Universität Wuppertal recognized Jung on September 22, 2010 by making him an honorary citizen of the university .
