Peter Stefan Herbst (born December 26, 1965 in Bonn ) is a German journalist and has been editor-in-chief of the Saarbrücker Zeitung since 2005 .

Life

After graduating from the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt-Gymnasium Bonn , Peter Stefan Herbst studied law at the Rheinische-Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and political science , German studies , and contemporary and modern history at the University of Cologne . In 1988 he worked as a freelancer for Bild und Bild am Sonntag ( Axel Springer Verlag ) in Munich and Hamburg . From 1988 to 1991 he worked as deputy press spokesman for the airline LTU in Düsseldorf .

From 1991 to 1994, Herbst worked as a columnist , editor for special tasks and deputy local manager at the Dresdner Morgenpost ( Gruner + Jahr ) and then until 1995 as a state political correspondent and head of the Dresden office for the Leipziger Volkszeitung . From 1995 to 1999 he was editor-in-chief of Dresdner Neuesten Nachrichten and from 1997 to 1999 also managing director of the publishing house Dresdner Nachrichten GmbH & Co. KG and from 1999 to 2004 editor-in-chief of Lausitzer Rundschau . During this time he developed the editorial concept for the new daily newspaper 20cent and its layout together with the American newspaper designer Mario Garcia . Herbst was also the founding editor-in-chief of 20cent , the product the first tabloid daily newspaper in Germany.

Herbst has been editor-in-chief of the Saarbrücker Zeitung since January 2005 . There he also introduced the 20cent title in 2005 , which was discontinued in 2009 as a result of the economic crisis and the decline in the advertising business. In early 2006, Herbst implemented the reader reporter concept, which was later adopted by Bild , Stern and numerous other media, in Germany for the first time . Since 2007 he has also been managing director of the correspondent office Berliner Medienservice GmbH . In 2010, the Supervisory Board of Saarbrücker Zeitung Verlag und Druckerei GmbH appointed Herbst as the company's authorized signatory .

From 1994 to 1996, Herbst hosted the MDR TV talk show Riverboat together with Christiane Gerboth and Jan Hofer . From 1997 to 2000 he was a lecturer at the Institute for Communication Sciences at the Technical University of Dresden . From 2005 to 2007 he gave guest lectures at the Faculty of Journalism of the Sofia State University and at the Chair of Mass Communication at the private New Bulgarian University in Sofia. From the beginning of 2008 to mid-2009, Herbst hosted the TV talk show SZ Talk on Saar TV . Since 2009 he has been a member of the supervisory board of the Catholic News Agency (KNA). Since September 2010 he has been moderating the discussion format “Saartalk” together with the editor-in-chief of SR-Fernsehen, Norbert Klein.

Honorary positions

From 1982 to 1984 Herbst was federal chairman of the Schüler Union . 1997 to 1999 he was a member of the board of the Saxon newspaper publishers. From 1999 to 2004 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Administration and Business Academy Cottbus. From 2005 to 2007 he was a member of the board of trustees of the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science in Saarbrücken. Herbst has been a member of the advisory board of the German Newspaper Museum in Wadgassen since 2005 . In 2008 he was appointed by the Theodor Wolff Prize Board of Trustees to the jury of the German Newspapers' Journalist Prize .

Awards

In 2004 and 2006, a jury from Medium Magazin voted Herbst among the “Journalists of the Year”. In 2006, the magazine Werben & Sellers ranked him among the “100 most important managers in the communications industry”.
