Petrifeld ( Romanian Petreşti , Hungarian Mezőpetri ) is a municipality in the Satu Mare district in northwestern Romania . At 27.33 percent, Petrifeld is the municipality with the largest proportion of Romanian Germans according to the 2011 census .
Geographical location
Petrifeld is located in the historical Sathmar County in the so-called Câmpia Careilor (Careier plain) on the Hungarian border. In the southwest of the Satu Mare district, on the European route 671 , the place is about eleven kilometers south of the city of Carei ( Groß-Karol ), the district capital Satu Mare ( Sathmar ) is about 48 kilometers northeast of Petrești.
history
Petrifeld was first mentioned in a document in 1316 as Mezeu Petri . In 1740 German settlers - so-called Sathmar Swabians - settled in the village.

Since 1880 the highest number of inhabitants and that of the Magyars in 1966 have been determined in the area of today's municipality. The highest number of Romanian Germans was registered in 1930, that of Romanians in 2002 and 2011, and that of Roma (159) in 2002. Furthermore, one claimed to be a Ukrainian in 1977 and a Serb in 1992 .
The 2011 census showed the following ethnic composition of the population of Petrifeld: 745 were Magyars, 434 Romanian Germans, 199 were Romanians, 167 Roma, six known themselves as Tschangos and the rest gave no information about their ethnicity.
Local politics
In the local elections in June 2012, the mayor of the village Georg Otto Marchis was re-elected by the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania . The parish council had 11 councilors; ten from the UDMR and one member from the social-liberal coalition USL .
