history

The place was first mentioned around 1182/85. The Abbey of Heiligenkreuz and Liechtenstein had possessions. In 1529 and 1683 the place was destroyed by the Turks. The Liechtenstein had been the landlords since 1807/08. In 1783 Joseph II named the church a local curia , and in 1868 Hinterbrühl became its own parish.

A small previous chapel with a wooden tower was replaced by a brick church from 1724 to 1735 and dedicated to St. Vitus .

In 1830 the old church was torn down except for the tower and the high altar. Prince Johann I von Liechtenstein had a new classical church with two towers built according to plans by Franz Honnegger , which was consecrated in 1834. From 1959 to 1961 the northern cross arm was broken off and a nave was added to plans by Erich Boltenstern .

In 2009 the church was renovated.

The organ from 1962 is in a case from 1908.
