The Roman Catholic parish church of Gumpoldskirchen is located in the municipality of Gumpoldskirchen in the Mödling district in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to St. Michael and belongs to the dean's office Mödling in the vicariate Unter dem Wienerwald of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The building is a listed building .

Location description

The church dominates the market town on the church square with the Teutonic Order Castle next to it in an elevated position as a former castle church with a formerly fortified churchyard wall and moat .

history

The church is accepted from 1200 as a branch church of the Traiskirchen mother church of Melk Abbey . A pastor is mentioned in a document for 1216 . With 1241 the church is under the patronage of the Teutonic Order .

Building description

A defense tower is presented to the Gothic hall from the second half of the 14th century . The church is characterized by the fact that the nave and choir are of the same width and height.

Furnishing

The device is a late-Baroque high altar , side altars and a Rococo - pulpit . In the south there is a small Gothic side chapel , in the north there is a two-storey sacristy , restored around 1597 and extended by another side chapel around 1730. The tower around 1400 with a square floor plan made of unplastered ashlars merges with sloping roof spandrels into an octagonal bell storey with pointed arched sound windows and ends with a pointed helmet roof around 1870. In the tympanum from the 15th century on the nave portal is a painting Christ with disciples of Emmaus ( Lk 24, 13–35  EU ) by the painter Franz Bilko from 1945 to 1946. The organ from 1989 is by Helmut Allgäuer in a classicist case by Josef Loyp from 1837.
