history

The parish was founded before 1313. A Gothic building was first mentioned in a document in 1464. In the course of the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529, the church, as well as the whole place, burned down. In 1633 a general renovation took place under the pastor Johann Aichmüller. Among other things, the Gothic pointed arched vault was replaced by the round barrel vault, which has remained to this day. During the second Turkish siege of Vienna , the church burned down again in 1683. The building was renewed in 1685 and looted during the Kuruc Uprising in 1708 . From 1735 to 1737 the church was expanded under master builder Wimpassinger , the city master builder of Bruck an der Leitha . The nave was lengthened by around ten meters to the west and the main portal was moved to the center of the south wall and a small vestibule was built in front as a vestibule. In 1737 the dilapidated church tower was replaced by a new building. The sacristies with the oratorios were built in 1791 under master builder Anton Froschauer . In 1972 the exterior was restored.

Church building

Church exterior

The church is essentially a Gothic building that has been converted to Baroque style . On the south and north fronts, the length of the former Gothic nave is visible from the inclination of the single stepped buttresses . The long choir is closed in a semicircle. The square three-storey east tower is built onto the volute gables of the outer casing. The upper floor has Ionic corner pilasters . The onion helmet is from 1737. The south portal with a vestibule is attached to the nave. Above the portal is a curved, round gable with a niche. In this niche is a stone figure of St. Nicholas of Myra. On the left is a round arch niche with a crucifix and stone balustrade . On the right side are vestiges of an exposed Gothic portal. Between the third and fourth buttresses is a covered niche with a baroque polychrome crucifixion group from the 18th century. In front of it is a crypt slab from the 18th century with the inscription "Breunerische Bergräbnusz" in the floor. On both sides of the choir yoke there are two-storey, two-axis extensions in which the sacristies and oratories are housed. On the north side is a neo-Gothic chapel extension from 1873.

Church interior

The five-bay nave is barrel-vaulted with stitch caps . The vault rests on flat pilasters . The west gallery has no supports. There is gilded decoration on the straight parapet . There is a continuous cornice above the pilasters. The ceiling paintings are by HA Brunner from 1951. The picture shows " Assumption of Mary ". The triumphal arch is rounded. Furnishing

The high altar is a free-standing, flat altar wall from 1898. The altarpiece shows Saints Gallus and Nicholas with an old view of Neusiedl. It was painted by Johann Länner in 1738 . The picture is flanked by baroque figures in white frames. In the center are the figures of Saints Peter and Paul from the first half of the 18th century. The side altars from the first half of the 18th century consist of concave walls. On the left side the altarpiece shows the " Heart of Jesus ". In this is a plastic polychrome Pietà and angels with instruments of torture. The pulpit, the so-called "Fischerkanzel", from the middle of the 18th century is remarkable. The bulbous basket is shaped like the stern of a ship on silver waves. The bow with the mast and rigging is shown on the choir wall . The figures represent Christ with Peter sinking into the water. Behind them is Saint John . On the basket is a relief of a gilded interest penny . On the sound cover is a bell-shaped hood with the tablets of the Law of Moses. The benches and the font date from the 18th century. The holy clan is shown in one picture. Another picture on the south wall of the nave above the south portal shows God the Father. The picture from the 18th century was the former upper picture of the high altar. To the right of the south portal is a figure of St. John Nepomuk from the 18th century. In the north chapel there is a neo-Gothic winged altar with pictures of the birth of Jesus, the crucifixion and the resurrection. They date from the end of the 19th century.
