An old coal road crosses here, which used to be used to transport charcoal to the Mansfeld copper smelters and which is now used as a forest path.

Geographical location

The pass is located in Horseheads Unterharz in Harz / Saxony-Anhalt Nature Park between Wippra in the north-northwest and Grillenberg in the south-southeast. It is located on Landesstraße 230, which runs between these two Sangerhausen districts. It is on the watershed between the Saale tributaries Brumbach (rises near the Brumbach desert ) in the north and Gönna (rises near the pass) in the south.

Quarry

There is a disused quarry at the horses' heads , in which green slate was mined until around 1960 , mainly for road construction. In the vicinity of the quarry is one of the geodetic points that were set in the 1960s to observe the Harz uplift.

Meilerplatz on the Kohlenstrasse

About 650 m west-southwest of the pass in the forest on the coal road , which was experimentally paved with soaked beech wood in 1926 , next to a fork in the path ( 384.7 m above sea level ) there is a Meilerplatz ( ), which was listed as no.210  until 2016 System of stamping points of the Harz hiking pin was included. There you will find charcoal burner huts and charcoal piles and display boards about the charcoal trade.
