Bell cast by Ph. Schweitzer in 1710

Johann Philipp Schweitzer (born March 6, 1683 in Werdorf ; † 1754 ) was a German bell founder from Asslar- Werdorf in the first half of the 18th century . He poured a few bells for Central Hesse and the sometimes more distant surroundings, few of which have survived.

history

Count Wilhelm von Solms-Greifenstein had given Philipp Schweitzer's great-grandfather, who had moved from Ulm to Werdorf as a pastor , a "hereditary and ever-defensive" freedom from all serfdom and all duties for him and all his descendants . Philipp Schweitzer was born on March 6, 1683 in Werdorf. Around 1708 he joined the foundry of his father-in-law Dilman Schmid , whose daughter Anna Kunigunda he had married .

In 1709 he and Schmid were heard as experts in order to assess a bell for the Marienkirche made by the Frankfurt foundry family Schneidewind and criticized by Hanau .

Schweitzer took over the foundry around 1715. After his wife Anna Kunigunda died in 1729, he married Anna Margaretha Benderin in 1730, which he immortalized in the inscription of three bells cast for Griedel . Schweitzer had a daughter with her named Margaretha Constantina Sophia and in 1737 a son named Conrad. Schweitzer died in Werdorf in 1754.

Characteristics

Schweitzer took over most of the features of his master for his bell casting, such as the inscription in Baroque antiqua in capital letters , the decorative rings on the Wolm including various decorative friezes on the hood, some images of saints on the flanks and an ordinary six-handle crown with almost circular handles, cuboid in cross-section . In terms of sound, he followed the rib of his teacher Schmid and thus cast Molloctave bells that deviated slightly to imperceptibly from the ideal.

Works

In the two world wars , many bells were melted down for armament purposes or destroyed by fires . Some returned from the bell camp in Hamburg (“ bell cemetery ”) after the Second World War . Some were already cast in the 18th or 19th century.

The following list gives an - certainly incomplete - overview of the bells by Philipp Schweitzer.
