Philipp Wilhelm Friedrich von Dorndorf

Philipp Wilhelm Friedrich von Dorndorf (born May 28, 1827 in Osnabrück , † May 8, 1901 in Hanover ) was a royal Hanoverian cavalry master , later a royal Prussian lieutenant general and as such was the last commander of the 1st Infantry Brigade. He was in Prussia in 1887 ennobled .

His parents were the Hanoverian Major Friedrich Dorndorf († April 22, 1863) and his wife Artemise Diedrichs († February 22, 1874).

Life

He received his education at the grammar school in Osnabrück and then came to Hanover as a cadet on June 5, 1844. From there he was transferred to the Hanoverian 6th Infantry Regiment as a cadet sergeant on May 1, 1846. As early as November 2, 1846, he joined the Leib infantry regiment as a second lieutenant with a patent on September 19, 1846. During the March Revolution he was commanded from May 25 to September 10, 1848 to occupy the beach batteries on the Elbe and from October 26 to January 2, 1849 to the federal troops in the Thuringian duchies . In 1849 he fought during the first Schleswig War in the battle near Ulderup, for which he received the Guelph Order, 4th class . On January 1, 1855 he was then transferred to the Garde du Corps as a Premier-Lieutenant with a patent on December 18, 1854 , where he served as a regimental quartermaster . On November 29, 1859 he was promoted to Rittmeister there. During the German War of 1866 he fought against the Prussians in the Battle of Langensalza . After the defeat of the Kingdom of Hanover and the annexation by Prussia, the Hanoverian army was disbanded and Dorndorf was also released on December 31, 1866.

Therefore, he switched to the Prussian Army on March 9, 1867 , where he was aggregated as a captain in the 64th Infantry Regiment . On April 11, 1867, he was promoted to company commander and on January 18, 1870 to major . During the Franco-Prussian War he was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion on August 17, 1870 and fought during the campaign in the battles at Vionville , Gravelotte , Orleans , Artenay and Le Mans . He also took part in the siege of Metz and in the battles at Nancray, Azay, Epuisay, Montaille and Change. For this he received the Iron Cross 2nd Class on September 13, 1870 and the Iron Cross 1st Class on April 15, 1871 .

After the war he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on January 18, 1875 , and on January 12, 1878, he was transferred to the 60th Infantry Regiment as commander . On April 18, 1878 he was promoted to colonel there, was promoted to major general on December 6, 1883 and at the same time was transferred to the 1st Infantry Brigade as commander. On January 23, 1887, he received the Order of the Red Eagle, 2nd Class with Oak Leaves, and on March 8, 1887 , he was put up for retirement , and he was raised to hereditary nobility.

On March 22, 1896, he was given the character of Lieutenant General and on January 24, 1899, he was awarded the star of the Order of the Red Eagle. He died on May 8, 1901 in Hanover.

Dorndorf married Marie Luise Klara Dammert (born March 24, 1835). The couple had several children:
