Pierdonato Cesi (also Pietro Donato Cesi , Latin Petrus Donatus Caesius ; born May 13, 1522 in Rome or Todi ; † September 29, 1586 ) was an Italian cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

He came from a widespread Roman patrician family and was the son of Venanzio Cesi, called Chiappino, and his wife Filippa Uffreduzzo. Pierdonato Cesi was a cousin of Cardinals Paolo Emilio Cesi and Federico Cesi . He was distantly related to the cardinals Bartolomeo Cesi and the younger Pierdonato Cesi .

Grew up in Rome, he studied at the Universities of Ferrara and Perugia legal and was approved by the University of Bologna where he Andrea Alciato , had continued his studies for doctorate doctorate . He finished his studies in Ferrara and returned to Rome, where he was a member of the court of Cardinal Federico Cesi. During the pontificate of Pope Paul III. he was a trainee lawyer at the Courts of Justice of the Apostolic Signature and Papal House Prelate . About his consecration is not known, but as he did as Mitkonsekrator of bishops Filippo Maria Campeggi and Giulio Sauli is listed, it must be the episcopal ordination received. Since he arrived at the council in Trento at the end of February 1547 , the consecration must have taken place beforehand.

On June 25, 1546 he was appointed administrator of Narni ; he resigned from this in 1566. Pierdonato Cesi took part in the Council of Trento in 1547 . After holding some offices in the Papal States , he became a cleric in the Apostolic Chamber on March 23, 1565 .

In the consistory of May 17, 1570 Pope Pius V elevated him to cardinal. Pierdonato Cesi received the red hat and the titular church Santa Barbara on June 16 of the same year. On the same day he opted for the titular church of San Vitale . He took part in the conclave of 1572, which Pope Gregory XIII. chose. From 1580 to 1584 he was a legate in Bologna. He opted for the titular church of Sant'Anastasia on May 28, 1584 . Pierdonato Cesi was a participant in the 1585 conclave , from which Sixtus V emerged as pope.

He was buried in the Roman church of Santa Maria in Vallicella .

Remarks

  1. This date is based on the information in the grave inscription. However, from the files of the consistory of 1546 in which he was appointed administrator of Narni, it appears that he was then 26 years old and that the final appointment and consecration should take place after he reached the age of 27.
