Pierre Guffroy

Pierre-Jacques Guffroy (born April 22, 1926 in Paris , † September 27, 2010 in France ) was a French art director and production designer who won both an Oscar and three times the César for best production design . Along with Jacques Saulnier and Alexandre Trauner, he was awarded the César most frequently in this category.

Life

Guffroy began his career as an art director and production designer in the film industry in 1957 for the film Arsène Lupine, the thief of a million (Les aventures d'Arsène Lupine) and worked on the stage equipment for over sixty films until 1998.

In 1967 he was nominated with Willy Holt and Marc Frédérix for the Oscar for the best production design in a black and white film, namely for the war film Brennt Paris? (1966) by René Clément with Jean-Paul Belmondo , Charles Boyer and Leslie Caron in the leading roles .

At the first award ceremony in 1976 , Guffroy won the César for best production design in When the feast begins ... (Que la fête commence ...) by Bertrand Tavernier with the main actors Philippe Noiret , Jean Rochefort and Jean-Pierre Marielle .

At the César Awards in 1977 he was nominated twice for the César for the best production design: on the one hand for Mado (1976) by Claude Sautet with Ottavia Piccolo , Michel Piccoli and Jacques Dutronc , on the other hand for the horror film or thriller Der Mieter (1976) by and with Roman Polański as well as Isabelle Adjani and Melvyn Douglas in other roles.

At the Academy Awards in 1981 , he and Jack Stephens won the Oscar for best production design in the drama Tess (1979) by Roman Polański with Nastassja Kinski , Peter Firth and Leigh Lawson in the leading roles . He was also nominated for this film in 1980 for the César and in 1982 for the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Film Award) for best production design.

When he was awarded the César in 1987 , he won the award for the best production design in Pirates (1986) by Roman Polański with Walter Matthau , Cris Campion and Damien Thomas . In 1990 Guffroy won the César for the best production design in Valmont (1989) by Miloš Forman with Colin Firth , Annette Bening and Meg Tilly for the last time .
