The Kosñipata District is located in the Paucartambo Province in the Cusco region in south-central Peru . The district was established on June 15, 1962. It has an area of 3267 km². The 2017 census counted 4872 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 3873, in 2007 it was 4790. The district administration is located in the small town of Pilcopata (alternative spelling: Pillcopata) with 2059 inhabitants (as of 2017) at an altitude of 527 m . Pilcopata is located 50 km northeast of the provincial capital Paucartambo .
Geographical location
The Kosñipata district is located in the Peruvian Eastern Cordillera in the northeast of the Paucartambo province. It extends over a large part of the upper catchment area of the Río Alto Madre de Dios . The northwest of the district lies within the Manú National Park . In the extreme south, the district extends to the glaciated mountain range of the 5522 m high Jolljepunco (alternative name: Colquepunco) -
The Kosñipata district borders on the Paucartambo and Challabamba districts to the west, the Yanatile district ( Calca province ) to the northwest, the Manu and Madre de Dios districts (both in the Manu province ) to the north, and the districts to the southeast and south Camanti , Marcapata , Ocongate and Ccarhuayo (all four in Quispicanchi Province ).
