Pinuccio Sciola (born March 15, 1942 in San Sperate in Sardinia , † May 13, 2016 in Cagliari ) was an Italian sculptor and an artist of muralism .

life and work

At first Sciola was self-taught as an artist. By participating in a competition by the department store chain Rinascente, he won a scholarship in 1959 at the Art Academy in Cagliari , where he studied until 1964. In 1961 and 1962 he went on cultural trips, for example to Rome , Florence , Venice , Ravenna and Naples . In 1964 he attended the sculpture class at the International Summer Academy for Fine Arts in Salzburg . From 1964 to 1965 he studied at the Pedagogical University in Florence and graduated with a Magistero d'arte. In 1967 he received a scholarship to study in Spain , which allowed him to spend a year at the Universidad Complutense in Madrid . Sciola was already creating wall paintings from 1968, and in 1973 UNESCO invited him to study in Mexico . Under the influence of the works of the Mexican mural painter David Alfaro Siqueiros , Sciola became a follower of muralism. In 1976 Sciola took part in the Biennale di Venezia for Italy and in 1983 at the International Festival dei Due Mundi in Spoleto. In 1986 he received a scholarship for a stay in Paris . From 1990 to 1996 Sciola taught sculpture at the Art Academy in Sassari . In 2012 he was appointed Commander of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Italy.

Sciola lived and worked in San Sperate. He and other artists made his hometown famous for its murals. His sound stones also made him known worldwide. After his death, his children founded the PS Museum association in 2016, which - based on an idea by the artist - has set itself the goal of keeping the artist's life's work alive through the open-air museum Garden of Sounding Stones in San Sperate.
