The Pless pond is about 26 hectares renaturalised Stretch in the area of Neu-Ulm districts Reutti and Gerlenhofen who under the care of the local conservation group Gerlenhofener environmental protection working group (GAU) - Protective association for the Neu-Ulm habitat eV an important breeding and a resting area for endangered bird species.

history

The gravel quarrying at what would later become the Plessenteich was only approved on the condition that the area would be renatured after the end of its use. Gerlenhofen citizens, who rejected plans for an extension and expansion of economic use, founded the Gerlenhofen Environmental Protection Working Group (GAU) in 1979 . The resistance in the population led the Neu-Ulm city council not to agree to the extension of the rights of use on the Plessenteich. Four years later (1984) he adopted the GAU concept for the Plessenteich, which envisaged an increase in the mining area by 10 hectares while at the same time recultivating the unused area. The Neu-Ulm District Office approved the plans the following year. In 2003 the GAU finally bought the lake for 215,000 euros. Since then, extensive maintenance and design measures have been carried out: shallow water zones were created, parts of the site cleared, others replanted, brood rafts launched and several observation points, including a one-story tower, created. Part of the Plessenteich site was created as a compensatory measure for the expansion of the EvoBus location in Neu-Ulm . In total, the area is now 30 hectares.

Protection and care concept

Protection status

Care concept

In order to enable the highest possible biodiversity in a small space, the GAU intervenes with extensive maintenance measures in the natural development of the site. An attempt is made, gravel and lawns by mowing and cultivating before the encroachment to preserve to ground-nesting birds to encourage nesting. With gravel-covered rafts are gravel bars as on natural watercourses happen artificial sand partial walls escarpments replace.

A large part of the lake on the south bank is open to bathers. Wooden barriers mark the bathing area in the water.
