Pogórze (formerly also Pogórz , Podgórz (e) , German Pogorz or Pogorsch ) is a village with a Schulzenamt of the municipality of Skoczów in the Powiat Cieszyński of the Silesian Voivodeship in Poland .

Pogórze is on the border of the Silesian Foothills ( Pogórze Śląskie , in the east) and the Auschwitz Basin ( Kotlina Oświęcimska , in the west), about 15 km west of Bielsko-Biała and 55 km south of Katowice in the powiat (district) Cieszyn.

The village has an area of ​​863 hectares .

Neighboring towns are the city of Skoczów in the west, Kowale and Bielowicko in the north, Grodziec in the east, Górki Wielkie in the south, and Harbutowice in the southwest.

history

The village is located in the Olsa region (also Teschner Schlesien , Polish Śląsk Cieszyński ).

The place was first mentioned in a document around 1305 in Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis ( Tithe Register of the Diocese of Wroclaw ) as "Item in Pogorsz". The name means osada po górze , in German the place after (behind) the mountain .

Politically, the village originally belonged to the Duchy of Teschen , which existed from 1290 during the period of Polish particularism . Since 1327 consisted fiefdom of the Kingdom of Bohemia and since 1526 it belonged to the Habsburg monarchy .

After the abolition of patrimonial , it formed a community in Austrian Silesia , Bielitz district and the judicial district of Skotschau from 1850 . In the years 1880–1910, the population decreased from 890 in 1880 to 862 in 1910. Most of them were Polish-speaking (between 92.2% and 95.4%) and German-speaking (between 4.6% in 1880 and 7.1% in 1910) and Czech speakers (1.4% in 1900). In 1910, 73.8% were Roman Catholic, 25.2% Protestant, and there were 9 (1%) Jews.

In 1920, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the end of the Polish-Czechoslovak border war , Pogórze came to Poland. This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II .

From 1975 to 1998 Pogórze belonged to the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .
