Ochaby is located in the Auschwitz Basin (Kotlina Oświęcimska) , on the Vistula about 20 km west of Bielsko-Biała and 50 km south of Katowice in the powiat (district) Cieszyn.

history

The village is located in the Olsa area (also Teschener Silesia , Polish Śląsk Cieszyński ).

The place was first mentioned in 1305 in the Liber fundationis episcopatus Vratislaviensis (tenth register of the diocese of Breslau ) as "Item in Ochabe debent esse viginti mansi" . The name, originally Ochabce , comes from the old Polish word Ochab , meaning marsh , swamp .

Politically, the village originally belonged to the Duchy of Teschen , which existed from 1290 during the period of Polish particularism . Since 1327 consisted suzerainty of the Kingdom of Bohemia and since 1526 it belonged to the Habsburg monarchy . In the 16th and 17th centuries the village belonged to the Pelhřim von Třánkovice ( Pelchrzim ) family.

The parish Ochabn in the deanery Teschen was mentioned in the Peterspfennig register of 1447. After 1540 under Wenceslaus III. Adam the Reformation and the Church was taken over by Lutherans. A special commission returned them to the Catholics on April 15, 1654.

After the abolition of patrimonial he formed from 1850 a community in Austrian Silesia , Bielitz district and Schwarzwasser judicial district .

In 1920, after the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy and the end of the Polish-Czechoslovak border war , Ochaby came to Poland. It then belonged to the autonomous Silesian Voivodeship (Powiat Bielski, since 1924 Powiat Cieszyński). This was only interrupted by the occupation of Poland by the Wehrmacht in World War II . It then belonged to the district of Teschen in the administrative district of Katowice in the province of Silesia (since 1941 province of Upper Silesia ).

From 1975 to 1998 Ochaby was part of the Bielsko-Biała Voivodeship .

Population development

In the years 1880 to 1910 the village had about 1,100 inhabitants, the majority were Polish-speaking (between 99.9% in 1880 and 93.3% in 1910) and 6.7% German-speaking (1910). In 1910 64.8% were Roman Catholic, 34.6% Protestant, and 7 of the residents were Jews.
