Pompeo Aldrovandi (born September 23, 1668 in Bologna , † January 6, 1752 in Montefiascone ) was an Italian cardinal and bishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

The son of Count Ercole from a patrician family began his studies at the Collegio Romano in Rome , continued them in Siena at the Collegio Tolomei , to finally study law at the University of Bologna , which he left in 1691 with the doctorate Doctor iuris utriusque . Five years later he went as a protégé of Pope Innocent XII. to the Roman Curia and initially worked for the Apostolic Signature . He was ordained a priest on October 5, 1710 . As Chargé d'affaires of the Nunciature in Spain from 1712 to 1716 he represented the Nuncio.

On October 5, 1716 he was appointed titular archbishop of Neocesarea in Ponto . He was ordained bishop on October 11th of the same year by Cardinal Fabrizio Cardinal Paolucci, Secretary of State . In 1717 and 1718 he represented the interests of the Holy See as Apostolic Nuncio in Spain . But the political problems between the Holy See and the King of Spain forced him to return to Bologna, where he lived until the death of Clement XI. stayed. On March 23, 1729 he was appointed titular patriarch of Jerusalem and administered the Eternal City as governor and as vice treasurer from September 30, 1733 to March 24, 1734 with the papal finances.

He took part in the 1740 conclave , in which the elections were unsuccessful for forty days because many cardinals voted for him, but their votes were insufficient to make the election in his favor. Eventually, Cardinal Lambertini became Pope Benedict XIV. Aldrovandi was the Datar of His Holiness between 1740 and 1743 .

He died on January 6, 1752 at the age of 83 in Montefiascone. He was buried in the church of San Petronio in Bologna, where he had a chapel built and to which he left part of his property.
