The players started the tournament in a similar format at times, as they did in the late 1970s, the tournament divided into two groups of three with a group stage. After a simple round-robin tournament was played, the two best players in each group advanced to the semi-finals, from which the winner was played in the knockout system . The games in the group phase lasted eight to nine frames, while the semi-finals were played in the best of 9 frames and the final in the best of 17 frames .

final

For the first and only time in the history of the tournament there was an all-Welsh final. Both Doug Mountjoy and Ray Reardon had been successful in the Pontins Professional; Mountjoy had only one title to show, Reardon was one of the most successful players in tournament history with four titles from six finals until 1982. While Mountjoy got through the group stage without any problems, but then only defeated Willie Thorne in the decider in the semifinals , Reardon's group stage was significantly closer than his 5-2 semifinal victory over Dennis Taylor .

The first frames of the final were even and so after four frames it was 2: 2, but then Mountjoy was able to break away to take the 5: 2 lead. Ray Reardoon came up to 5: 4, 7: 6 and 8: 7, but couldn't equalize, so that Mountjoy won the final with 9: 7.
