geography

location

The Poppenberg belongs to a ridge of the Brilon Heights that runs in a west-east direction and surrounds the Brilon plateau . Its main peak is about 2 km south of the center of the city of Brilon, 0.8 km west of Poppenberg (residential area south-southeast of the city center) and 1.1 km northeast of the Gudenhagen-Petersborn district .

Less pronounced secondary peaks of the Poppenberg are a knoll located about 0.5 km to the west ( 576  m ), a 900 m southwest located knoll ( 566  m ) and the Gudenhagener Poppenberg 900 m southeast ( 564  m ). Like the Poppenberg, they belong to the Brilon heights.

On the eastern flank of the Poppenberg lies the Poppenberg nature reserve (NSG no. 389864), which was founded in 2007 and is 0.68  hectares in size.

Natural allocation

The Poppenberg is located in the natural spatial main unit group Süderbergland (No. 33) on the border of the natural area Briloner Kalkplatten (Briloner Kalkplateau) (334.70; in the north and northeast), which belongs to the subunit Briloner Land (334.7) in the main unit North Sauerland Oberland (334) , to the sub-unit Oberruhrgesenke (335.0; in the southwest), which belongs to the main unit Sauerländer Senken (335). Its landscape descends to the south and south-east in the main unit Ostsauerländer Gebirgsrand (332) and in the subunit Diemel-Bergland (332.7) in the natural area Padberger Schweiz (332.70).

Watershed and rivers

The Rhine-Weser watershed runs over the Poppenberg . On its eastern flank, the Möhne rises directly at the Poppenberg residential area , which after a short run through the Brilon spa gardens reaches the core town of Brilons, and the Hillbringse rises south of the mountain , which flows around the mountain in a wide arc to the northwest and flows into the Aa in front of the Aamühlen . The rivers mentioned drain into the Rhine via the Möhne and Ruhr . The short watercourses that arise southeast of the mountain, such as the Petersborn brook , flow over the Hängemecke , Hoppecke and Diemel into the Weser .

Others

About 150 m east-northeast of the Poppenberg summit there is a transfer device , a ski hut and the mountain station (approx.  595  m ) of a ski lift , the ski slope of which leads down the northern slope of the mountain. South of the summit is a former quarry that has long been covered with trees . To the east and south of the mountain, in the Möhne and Hillbringse valleys, a section of the Rothaarsteig leads past, a long-distance hiking trail that runs particularly over the main ridge of the Rothaargebirge from Brilon south to Dillenburg .
