The Prag is a ridge north of downtown Stuttgart between the Höhenpark Killesberg and the Rosensteinpark . The district bordering the Nordbahnhof and Pragfriedhof to the west is called Auf der Prag and belongs to the Stuttgart-Nord district . Today the district, which is mainly characterized by older multi-family houses, is very multicultural and benefits from its central location and proximity to the surrounding green areas.

History of the name

The name Prague is sometimes confusing with the Czech capital Prague . The name probably comes from the Celtic word barg , which means "hill" or "neck". Another theory connects Prague with the word fallow and refers to the fact that the area in the north was deserted and empty after the clearing in the 12th century, as can be seen from a document from 1481.

The first documentary mention was in 1292 Bri et Brage . Above all, it must be seen in connection with the two thousand year old Prague Pass (today's Pragsattel), which already gained great importance in Roman times as a traffic junction on the route from Strasbourg via Pforzheim to the Cannstatt Castle , as well as in the Middle Ages through the Württemberg main - Reichsstraße from Ulm to Bruchsal. 1334 is in the inventory books of the Esslingen hospital wingart (Weingarten) sita uf Bragt .

We find changing spellings: 1345 Brak , 1350 Bragt , 1451 uff der Brackt , 1585 uff den long and short Brägdten . It was not until 1700 that the B was transformed into a P - but on maps from around 1900 the spelling Brag can still be found. The spelling with "P" is a so-called hyper-correct form , because in Swabian (often incorrect from a standard language point of view) "pr-" is always articulated as "br-".

Pragsattel and road tunnel

The Pragsattel stop of the light rail, in the background the Prague bunker

At 305 m above sea level, the Pragsattel is the lowest point of this ridge. Since the three federal highways B 10 , B 27 and B 295 , the access to Killesberg and several tram lines meet here, this intersection is chronically overloaded. Around 110,000 vehicles drive through the intersection every day. This makes it the busiest in Stuttgart.

For this reason, it was rebuilt and expanded again and again: The Pragsattel stop with the city and tram lines that served it were moved underground in the 1980s. In 2002, work began on building the 720 m long Pragsattel tunnel between Pragstrasse / Löwentor and Heilbronner Strasse. Since it opened on May 6, 2006, almost half of the total traffic volume (45,000 vehicles) on the B 10 no longer has to use the saddle. The construction costs amounted to around € 100 million. In addition, the 132 m long Auerbach Bridge now replaces the old junction to the Burgholzhof district and the Robert Bosch Hospital ; it was completed in December 2003.

Auerbach Bridge over Heilbronner Strasse

Heilbronner Strasse in the direction of Zuffenhausen was expanded to six to eight lanes between Pragsattel and Friedrichswahl (Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen). In future, traffic on the B 295 from Feuerbach will also be diverted via Borsigstraße and then via the widened Heilbronner Straße. This will lead the traffic on the B 295 from Feuerbach to Cannstatt to the B 10 through the Pragsattel tunnel and further relieve the above-ground part of the intersection. For this purpose, Zuffenhausen is also polluted with exhaust gases.

On the Cannstatter side of the saddle which is currently, to increase capacity B 10 , a new Rosenstein Tunnel under the Rosensteinpark built to relieve the Prague street. Critics of the Rosenstein tunnel claim that the construction of the tunnel would further increase the total traffic on the B 10 in the Stuttgart city passage. For this reason, it meets with rejection in many parts of the city.

In the early 2000s, TD Trump Deutschland AG planned to build a 200 meter high " Trump Tower Europe" here. The plans were not approved by the local council and TD Trump Deutschland AG was dissolved in 2005. Donald Trump also failed when he tried to sue the city for damages .

Prague bunker

The most striking point on the Pragsattel is the Pragbunker, a high- rise bunker from the Second World War that has recently been fitted with a large advertising video wall. Because of the widely visible advertisement for the Bosch company until September 2013 , it is popularly known as the Bosch Tower. In 2013, Bosch, which shortly beforehand had built the world's largest illuminated advertising on the Bosch car park at the new Stuttgart trade fair, no longer extended the contract for its illuminated advertising. The “Bosch” lettering was replaced by the advertising lettering of the Mahle company , whose headquarters are only a few hundred meters below the tower on Pragstrasse (B 10) in the direction of Neckar.

The bunker was designed by the architect Paul Bonatz and went into operation in 1942. Originally it was built for 2100 people, but offered protection for up to 3000 people in the event of attacks. Three two-centimeter anti-aircraft guns were stationed on the roof, and their ammunition was lifted upstairs. The bunker was never hit during the war.

After the end of the war, the bunker served as a men's dormitory and offered 135 people in 51 rooms. The last resident moved out in 1964. The building was then placed under civil protection and rebuilt for the Cold War to protect against NBC weapons . Among other things, a measuring point for radioactivity was installed.

Prague tunnel

The Prague Tunnel is a railway tunnel under the Prague towards the northwest. It creates the connection between the Stuttgart terminus and the railway lines to the north.

Surroundings

Art Nouveau - crematorium in Prague cemetery

To the west above Prague lies the Killesberg Park , the site of the 1939 garden show and the 1993 international horticultural exhibition . The area of the former Stuttgart trade fair also belongs to it .

To the east, the area slopes down from the Prague, here lies the Leibfriedsche Garten - then follows the Rosenstein Park , further below the Wilhelma zoological-botanical garden in the Bad Cannstatt district on the banks of the Neckar .

South below the Pragsattel on Heilbronner Strasse is the Pragfriedhof in the “Am Pragfriedhof” district. With 20 hectares, it is one of the largest in the city and was opened in 1873. From 1905 to 1907, the associated party hall and the only crematorium in Stuttgart were built there in Art Nouveau style .

To the north, on the border with the Pragsattel (but already in the Feuerbach district), has been the Stuttgart Theater House since March 2003 .
