Career
Gunneswaran, who started tennis at the age of seven, played only a few matches on the ITF Junior Tour until 2008 and achieved his best placement in the junior world rankings with rank 148.
After his junior career, the Indian played a few tournaments on the third-class ITF Future Tour before taking a long break and not regularly participating in professional tournaments again until 2013. He quickly achieved good results in futures, winning two singles and one double. As a result, he came to his first assignment at the end of the year on the higher endowed ATP Challenger Tour in Champaign . Here he won his first match at this level against Denys Moltschanow and then lost to Daniel Smethurst . He finished the year in singles with 479 for the first time in the top 500 of the world rankings . For most of 2014 and parts of 2015, Gunneswaran did not participate in tournaments. Future titles in November 2015 and September 2016 as well as good results at Challengers let him rise again to number 284 by the end of 2016. In Pune 2016 he reached his first Challenger final, which was lost in three sets against Sadio Doumbia . In 2017 he kept his level. He won three futures and from now on was able to compete more often at Challengers due to his world ranking position, where he once reached the semi-finals in Tiburon . In doubles he reached the final in Samarqand . Due to its success, he became the head of the team Davis Cup team Indian Mahesh Bhupathi for the match against Uzbekistan for the first time in the Davis Cup appointed. Here he won one of two matches at 4-1.
At the beginning of 2018 in the Davis Cup, Gunneswaran and India won the game against China after falling 2-0 down. He won the decisive game against Wu Yibing . In the same month he moved into the finals of the $ 150,000 Challenger in Anning . There he defeated Mohamed Safwat in three sets and won the highest endowed Challenger. In qualifying for the French Open , Gunneswaran lost the last round against Elias Ymer , but could actually have moved into the main draw as a lucky loser . However, he had registered for the Challenger in Vicenza at the same time and was therefore no longer eligible to play. The premiere on the ATP World Tour took place in June, when he qualified for the main field of the Mercedes Cup in Stuttgart after victories against Evan King and Christian Harrison . Here he succeeded against the world number 23. Denis Shapovalov his biggest win so far. In the following round he lost to Guido Pella . In Atlanta and Los Cabos he reached two other main fields, but remained there without a win. In June, he was the best in the ranking with 152nd place. In addition, he won the bronze medal in singles for India at the Asian Games in August after failing in the semi-finals to Denis Istomin , the eventual winner. It was the sixth individual medal by an Indian at the Asian Games.
