Puella Magi Madoka Magica ( Japanese 魔法 少女 ま ど か ☆ マ ギ カ , Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika ) is an anime television series produced by the Shaft animation studio and directed by Akiyuki Shimbō in 2011. She takes up the magical girl genre and tells the story of the young girl Madoka Kaname. The television series was also implemented as a manga, novel and various computer games, as well as a movie series that started in autumn 2012.

action

The young student Madoka Kaname ( 鹿 目 ま ど か , Kaname Madoka ) has a dream at night in which a dark-haired girl defends herself against an evil force, but is far inferior to it. Before there is a decision, Madoka wakes up and goes to school with her friends as usual. There she meets the girl from her dream, who is new to her class and who introduces herself as Homura Akemi ( 暁 美 ほ む ら , Akemi Homura ). In addition, Homura seems to know a lot about Madoka. During a private conversation, Homura asks her whether her friends and family are important to her. If so, then she should stay exactly as she is, otherwise she would risk losing everything. On the way home, Madoka visits a music store with her school friend Sayaka Miki ( 美 樹 さ や か , Miki Sayaka ). In addition to the music, however, she also hears a voice that asks for help. Following the voice, she finds herself in the hallways of storage rooms, where she finally comes across the wounded little magical being, Kyubey ( キ ュ ゥ べ え ). When she takes it under her protection, it turns out that it was hunted by Homura. She insists that Madoka hand the animal over to her, but Madoka refuses. On the run from Homura she gets help from Sayaka and the two find themselves, while they are still running, in a strange world where they are pursued by numerous strange creatures. But they are saved in time by Mami Tomoe ( 巴 マ ミ , Tomoe Mami ), who fights back the pursuers with magically conjured muskets and confronts Homura. She is forced to withdraw while Mami Kyubey heals. At the same time, Kyubey Madoka and Sayaka offers to turn them into Magical Girls.

The transformation into a magical girl is linked to the tempting offer that the girl is granted a wish. Mommy warns them, however, that they should think twice about this wish, because as Magical Girls they have to fight witches and thereby risk their lives. So that Madoka and Sayaka get an idea of life as a magical girl, Mami offers them to accompany them on the hunt for a witch. The witches have very different shapes and have a preference for throwing people into misery. When they watch a young woman attempt suicide, all three enter a magical barrier in which Mommy confronts the witch and can destroy her with routine casualness. Back from the parallel world that was also destroyed by this, they find a grief seed (dt. "Suffering seed " or also "mourning seed "), which is used by mommy to create her soul gem (dt. " Soul stone"), the source of power Magical Girls, clean. Homura, who once again tries to prevent the girls from transforming, refuses Mami's offer to use the Grief Seed as well, which worsens their relationship with one another.

The next day they join Mommy again and learn that only witches and not their confidants leave Grief Seeds behind and are still busy thinking about their wishes. Sayaka visits her childhood friend Kyōsuke Kamijō ( 上 条 恭介 , Kamijō Kyōsuke ), who has been in the hospital since an accident in which his left hand was irreparably damaged. When his condition worsened again the next day, she is not allowed to visit him and leaves the hospital with Madoka. Outside they notice a grief seed stuck in the wall of the hospital, from which, as Kyubey explains, a new witch will soon emerge. Since they did not ask Mommy for her phone number, they have no way of contacting her. Since the witch can hide in the barrier that she would soon create and it would be difficult to find her again, Sayaka decides to stay behind and guard the Grief Seed while Madoka is supposed to get Mami. When she returns with Mommy, Sayaka is already stuck in the world of the witch. You enter the labyrinth and are guided to the center by Kyubey via telepathy. Homura also shows up and tries to convince Mommy that this would be a stronger witch than the last ones and that she should be left to her. Mommy doesn't trust her, however, and magically captivates her. On the way to Kyubey and Sayaka, Madoka explains to Mami that she couldn't make a choice. But since she always thought she was useless and would only cause problems for everyone, it would be her greatest wish to stand by her as a magical girl and to help people by hunting witches. Mommy tearfully admits that life as a magical girl would actually be terrible, that she is only trying to appear cool, although this task takes all her strength and time and she has no one to talk to about her problems. Kyubey warns that the witch is about to hatch and they have to hurry, whereupon Mommy, filled with happiness by Madoka's words that she is no longer alone, quickly takes down all hostile creatures on her way and with regained self-confidence against them Witch Charlotte fights. She is so superior that the witch seems to be defeated after a few seconds. The witch's body is, however, much larger than expected. Mommy freezes in shock while Charlotte comes up to her in a split second, bites her head off and then eats her up. Freed again by Mami's death, Homura comes to the aid of the two girls and destroys the witch. While Madoka and Sayaka cannot grasp what has just happened and burst into tears, Homura advises them to memorize this moment well so that they understand what it can mean to be a magical girl.

Madoka and Sayaka decide not to become Magical Girls after all, whereupon Kyubey leaves them. When Sayaka, however, visits Kyōsuke again in the hospital, she asks Kyubey to make her a magical girl, with the desire to heal Kyōsuke's hand. At the same time, a new magical girl appears, Kyoko Sakura, who is a lot more brutal than Sayaka or Mami. Despite a fight that almost meant Sayaka's death, they become good friends and Kyoko tells Sayaka her life story. Some time later Kyōsuke can leave the hospital and goes back to school. Sayaka's friend Hitomi Shizuki then confesses her love to him, whereupon Sayaka is very jealous and breaks up inside. Dirt accumulates in her soul gem and in her desperation, Sayaka becomes a witch who then kills Kyoko with a heavy heart, but dies herself trying.

From Homura, Madoka learns the whole truth about the Magical Girls and why Homura wants to protect them. Homura comes from a different time level, because due to her wish she is in a time loop and has relived the same sequence several times and thus created new time levels; and all time levels led to almost the same scenario: the fight against the most powerful witch "Walpurgis Night" and the end of Madoka. Homura's original goal was to save Madoka's life, as she died on the first level as Magical Girl when she and Mami won against Walpurgis Night and lost her life. But on the second time level, Madoka herself became a witch, through which Homura learned the truth about the Magical Girls and Kyubey. But on the third level she was unsuccessful in convincing the other girls of the truth, and when they learned the truth in the form of Sayaka's witch form, the situation escalated with Mami's attempted rampage, with Kyoko dying at Mami's hand and Mami herself through Madoka. At this time, too, Madoka died when she cleansed Homura's Soul Gem with the last Grief Seed and got euthanasia from this. Because of these experiences, Homura has lost confidence in Mami and Sayaka and tries to prevent Madoka from making a pact with Kyubey in the later time levels. But on the fourth known time level, she succeeds neither in defeating Walpurgis Night single-handedly nor in preventing Madoka's transformation into Magical Girl, which in turn resulted in Madoka becoming the most powerful witch herself after the victory against Walpurgis Night, Kriemhild Gretchen , who the world in could destroy in a very short time. Since Madoka is in the center of Homura's desire, an even greater karma arises with each new level of time, which exponentially increases Madoka's potential as a magical girl.

Even with so much firepower and artillery, Homura can not harm Walpurgis Night and loses her hopes. But Madoka has finally decided on a wish with which she wants to change the cruel system of the Magical Girls. She wishes Kyubey to make all witches disappear from human history and in the future before they are even born. And because Madoka herself would have to disappear at some point because of this wish and thus create a paradox, her wish can only come true if she becomes an omnipresent existence, a goddess. Because of their wish, Mami and Kyoko escape death, but Sayaka, like all the other magical girls who were supposed to become witches, disappears and ends up in a better place. No one except Homura and Madoka's little brother can remember Madoka, and instead of witches, demons appear, against which the Magical Girls fight.

In the epilogue it is shown that Homura wants to fight a horde of demons in a desert alone and with other forces. She hears the soft call from the goddess Madoka. She is getting ready to fight and huge wings are growing on her back.

Characters

main characters

Cosplayers as Sayaka Miki, Kyoko Sakura, Madoka Kaname, Mami Tomoe and Homura Akemi (from left to right)

Madoka Kaname ( 鹿 目 ま ど か , Kaname Madoka )
Madoka is the 14-year-old protagonist of the series and is a potential magical girl. She has pink hair, two braids on the sides, which are tied with red bows, pink eyes and a small body size, so she has a cliché-like appearance of a magical girl. This is supported by their personality. Madoka is helpful, good-natured, naive and has low self-confidence. Unlike other protagonists of Magical Girl series, Madoka is not a Magical Girl for most of the series, but just a normal girl. Because her transformation to Magical Girl would herald the end of the world. Because of Homura Akemi's wish, Madoka is the center of Homura's wish, which creates tremendous karma and would make Madoka both the most powerful magical girl and the most powerful witch. Although Madoka cannot show any special talents as a normal person, it is shown in the other time levels that she was very competent and self-confident as a Magical Girl, did not shy away from anything and became even stronger in each later time level.
Madoka also has a special relationship with some Magical Girls. She and Sayaka Miki have been friends since childhood, but when Sayaka as a magical girl distances herself further and further from Madoka, Madoka continues to try to save Sayaka from her dangerous path. Even when she becomes a witch, Madoka hopes that Sayaka will come back to her mind, which is why Kyoko Sakura takes her with him as a witch in the fight against Sayaka in order to increase the chances of Sayaka's change back. With Mami Tomoe , who Madoka admires very much, she manages to make friends, which gives Mami the motivation to face the fight against the witches without despair. However, this leads to careless fighting and Mommy dies. On the first timeline, Madoka becomes Homura's first girlfriend and Madoka's death is the reason Homura became the Magical Girl. Homura obsessively tries to save Madoka's life, which he only realizes late.
As a Magical Girl, Madoka has the ability to shoot light arrows with a bow. This ability becomes even more powerful at each later time level, so that Madoka can destroy the witch Walpurgis Night with just one shot in the fourth time level . In the main time level, Madoka is known officially as Ultimate Madoka ( ア ル テ ィ メ ッ ト ま ど か , Arutimetto Madoka ) through her desire to become the goddess of hope, and thus possesses the ability to prevent the births of witches and leads the lost Magical Girls to a better place . Ultimate Madoka herself is an ubiquitous existence that only her little brother Tatsuya and Homura can remember. Madoka is known in a parallel future as a witch under the name Kriemhild Gretchen and even more powerful than Walpurgis Night , which is why she herself also represents the greatest danger.

Homura Akemi ( 暁 美 ほ む ら , Akemi Homura )
Homura is a mysterious magical girl who appears as Madoka's new classmate and very often intervenes in the action. In fact, she comes from another time plane, as she can create multiple time planes through her desire and is caught in a time loop. As long as she cannot save Madoka's life, she repeats the same time over and over. In the first time level, Homura was still extremely shy, tearful, physically and mentally weak and had very little self-confidence. Her friendship with Madoka had given her life new light, which is why she tried everything to prevent Madoka's death or her transformation into a witch. With each subsequent level of time, Homura has learned to fight, gained experience and developed her personality. She became more and more self-confident, but also more bitter and cooler, so she hardly shows any feelings in the main time level. Because of her experiences in the earlier time levels, she has lost her trust in Mami Tomoe and Sayaka Miki , but still tries to save their lives as long as it is not too late.
With her magical power, Homura can stop time with her shield and stow various weapons in her shield, so that she is the only magical girl to use real handguns and military guns, which she has stolen from the yakuza or the army. Before that, she made her own bombs, using instructions from the Internet. With her skills, experience and weapons, she is one of the strongest magical girls. But after Madoka has now disappeared through her own wish, Homura's wish and the nature of her magic power has changed, so that she now fights with a bow and thus has powers similar to Madoka. She also becomes an ally of Mami and Kyoko at the end of the series. Homura's witch form, which bears the name Homulilly , has been known since the video game Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Portable .

Sayaka Miki ( 美 樹 さ や か , Miki Sayaka )
Sayaka is Madoka's childhood friend and learned about the Magical Girls at the same time as Madoka. At the beginning she is still happy, extroverted and likes to fool around, but since Mami Tomoe's death and her own career as a magical girl, her character has changed more and more negatively from episode to episode. She is in love with the young violinist Kyōsuke Kamijō, who can no longer move his left hand due to a hand injury and had to give up his dream of playing the violin again. Sayaka visits him every day in the hospital, and when Kyōsuke has a nervous breakdown, Sayaka makes a pact with Kyubey despite the risk of ending up like Mommy. As a magical girl, she sees herself as a fighter for justice and is therefore at first enemies with Kyoko Sakura , who only fights for herself than for others. Only when she gets to know Kyoko better do they slowly become friends. But when Sayaka learns the truth about the Soul Gems, she no longer sees herself as a person, but as a zombie and has to give up her love for Kyōsuke, who now meets Hitomi Shizuki , Madokas and her friend. Sayaka slowly begins to go mad out of desperation, meanwhile doubts to fight for a just cause and finally transforms into the witch Oktavia von Seckendorff . Kyoko and Madoka try in vain to transform Sayaka back and so Kyoko kills himself and Sayaka / Oktavia so as not to leave them alone when she dies. In the finale, Madoka, the goddess of hope, prevents Sayaka's transformation into a witch and leads her to a better place.
As a Magical Girl, Sayaka has the ability to summon swords. However, its main ability is its strong healing power, with which it can automatically heal itself in a very short time. Later, she accepts to switch off her pain sensation completely in order to be able to fight the witches even more aggressively, even if this slows down her reaction time.

Mami Tomoe ( 巴 マ ミ , Tomoe Mami )
Mommy is an experienced magical girl who is a year older than Madoka and Sayaka. She acts as a role model and mentor for both of them and has also previously taught Kyoko Sakura to fight. Mommy seems aloof, stylish and mature, is very friendly, helpful, but in reality she feels very lonely because she lost her parents in her accident and as a magical girl has no more time for friends. She is also plagued by feelings of guilt, as she only saved herself and not her parents with her wish, which is why she wants to atone for her sin by fighting the witches. In the third known time level, Mommy suffers a nervous breakdown when she learns that Magical Girls will end up becoming witches. Therefore she kills her ally Kyoko without warning and then wants to take her other friends and herself. But she is killed by Madoka before Mami can shoot Homura. In the main time level, when Madoka explains to her that she also wants to become a Magical Girl in order to fight side by side with Mommy, Mommy has been so overjoyed that she fights the witch Charlotte very harshly and carelessly and is then eaten by her . But in the finale she comes back to life as a result of Madoka's wish, as this prevents the birth of Charlotte and with it Mami's death. Since then, Mami has fought side by side with Homura and Kyoko.
Mommy can conjure up muskets with her magic power and uses magical loops that can be used very flexibly, such as. B. as shackles, safety net or as a road. Her detection technique is Tiro Finale , in which she creates a huge revolver with her loop and fires a huge shot with it. She is extremely experienced and has taught several magical girls to fight, including Kyoko and, in the other timelines, Madoka and Homura. In addition, she fights very carefully and usually tries to identify the weak points of the witches. Mami's witch form, which bears the name Candeloro , has been known since the video game Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Portable .

Kyoko Sakura ( 佐 倉 杏子 , Sakura Kyoko )
Kyoko is an experienced magical girl from another area and took over her area after Mami's death. She is very confident, aggressive and seemingly selfish because she fights not to protect people but to win Grief Seeds . Her distinguishing features include her long, red hair, her sharp canine teeth and that she mostly eats something. She and Sayaka, who sees herself as a fighter for justice, come into conflict, but when Kyoko recognizes herself in Sayaka, she tries to prevent Sayaka from her self-destructive path. Kyoko herself has obtained more followers for her father, who was a priest, through her wish, but when the latter found out about Kyoko's powers, he killed himself and Kyoko's family. Since then she has lost her own ideals, does not want to help anyone without being asked and only fights for herself and punishes herself by isolating herself from others because she is very afraid of hurting someone again; so she separates from her mentor Mami, who taught her how to fight and who became friends with her. Nevertheless, Kyoko and Sayaka slowly become friends, and even then, when Sayaka has long since become a witch, Kyoko killed himself with Sayaka so as not to let them die alone. In the finale, her death is reversed by Madoka's desire to prevent the witches from being born, and Kyoko becomes an ally of Homura and Mami.
Before the start of the series, Kyoko was in possession of Illusion Magic, which Mami baptized as Rosso Fantasma , so Kyoko was able to create 13 duplicates of himself. However, after her family's tragedy, Kyoko's conscience blocks this ability. Since then she has had to rely on her long spear in combat, which can lengthen and bend at will, and it can also split into several parts, which are connected with a chain, which significantly extends the range of Kyoko's attacks. Kyoko can also create a barrier to isolate their opponents and keep outsiders from entering. In the fight against Oktavia von Seckendorff , Kyoko is able to detonate her Soul Gem in order to kill herself and the witch. Kyoko's witch form, which bears the name Ophelia , has been known since the video game Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Portable .

Kyubey ( キ ュ ゥ べ え , Kyūbē , calls itself Incubator [ イ ン キ ュ ベ ー タ ー , Inkyubētā ])
Kyubey is a sexless, alien life form who makes pacts with teenage girls. By granting them a wish, Kyubey transforms themselves into Magical Girls and in return they have to fight witches. Telepathy is part of his communication skills ; it also enables girls who are not magical girls but have a magical potential to communicate via telepathy as well. Kyubey is a capable manipulator, answering all questions truthfully, but not always answering with the full truth, which is why most girls are fooled by him. Since Kyubey can only think rationally and utilitarian , it feels that his method is more effective than cruel and inhuman. Only in the rarest of moments does it show signs of emotion, but no signs of empathy . Nor is it interested in people's problem issues such as B. the end of the world by Kriemhild Gretchen , since it is only interested in his own tasks.

Supporting characters

Madoka's mother; a hard working woman who likes to put on makeup and often comes home drunk. Other than that, she is a nice and caring person who is happy to give advice to her daughter Madoka if she has any issues. She is also friends with Madoka's class teacher Kazuko Saotome .

In episode 7, Hitomi confesses to her friend Sayaka that she is also in love with Kyōsuke Kamijō and wants to confess her love to him the next day. But since Sayaka had been in love with Kyōsuke longer than Hitomi, she grants Sayaka the chance to confess her own love for one day. Because Sayaka does not take this chance, Hitomi and Kyōsuke come together, which drives Sayaka to despair and ultimately turns her into a witch. Of the young girls in the series, Hitomi is the only one who has achieved her own happiness.

Kyōsuke Kamijō ( 上 条 恭介 , Kamijō Kyōsuke )
Kyōsuke is a musical child prodigy who played violin concertos at a young age. He and Sayaka had been friends since childhood and the latter fell in love with him. However, Kyōsuke's left hand was so injured in an accident that he can no longer move it, thus destroying his career as a violin player. Sayaka visits him every day in the hospital and brings him classical music to listen to, but instead of the music cheering him up, it has the opposite effect. After his nervous breakdown, Sayaka decides to become a magical girl to heal his hand. But even after his healing, he hardly has time for Sayaka and neglects her. And since Sayaka's body does not contain a soul, it has inferiority complexes that prevent it from even approaching it. Walpurgis Night ( ワ ル プ ル ギ ス の 夜 , Warupurugisu no Yoru )
Walpurgis Night, or Walpurgis in German dubbing, is the name of the most powerful witch, whose real name is not known. It appears in the prologue of episode 1 and later in episodes 10-12. Originally just a single witch, this witch is a fusion of countless other witches. Unlike other witches, Walpurgis Night does not need to hide behind a barrier. Its mere presence has resulted in innumerable deaths and disasters, and because it cannot be seen by humans, its occurrence is declared a natural disaster. It cannot be destroyed by a single Magical Girl and even withstands heavy artillery fired several times in a row.
In the first time level, Walpurgis Night is destroyed by Madoka Kaname and Mami Tomoe, but both have also died. In the second, she is destroyed by Madoka, Mami and Homura Akemi, whereby Mami dies and Madoka turns into a witch. In the third known time level, the witch is destroyed by Madoka and Homura, but both have used up their magic. In the fourth known time level, Walpurgis Night is destroyed by Madoka with just one shot, but then Madoka transforms into the witch Kriemhild Gretchen, which Walpurgis Night by far surpasses. And in the main time level she fights against Homura, who cannot harm her with her weapons, but Madoka's desire to extinguish the existence of the witches forever destroys Walpurgis Night once and for all.
The real name of Walpurgisnacht is unknown, as are the names of their families.
Kriemhild Gretchen
Kriemhild Gretchen is Madoka Kaname's witch form, which can be seen in episodes 10 and 12, but has no familiar. When Madoka transforms into a witch in the second level of time, Homura Akemi learns for the first time about the true nature of witches. In the later time levels, Kriemhild is even more powerful than Walpurgis Night and thus the true strongest witch, who is so powerful that she could destroy the world in a very short time. Her power results from the karma that was created by Homura Akemi's wish, where Madoka is at the center of her wish, which is why Kriemhild Gretchen becomes even more powerful with every further level of time. In the main time level she is so powerful that she could devour the world immediately, but Kriemhild Gretchen is destroyed before that by Ultimate Madoka , who wipes out the existence of all witches forever.

terminology

Magical Girl ( 魔法 少女 , Mahō Shōjo , sometimes also referred to as Puella Magi )
Magical Girls are born in the factory when a normal girl enters into a contract with Kyubey. At the same time it is granted a request for it. Depending on the type of wish, the girl's magical abilities differ or are related to her.
Witch ( 魔女 , majo )
Witches are the opposite of the Magical Girls. They are born of curses and despair and love to pass them on to people. If they are not killed, they persecute the people and give them so-called witch kisses ( 魔女 の 口 づ け , Majo no Kuchizuke ), whereby they succumb to the despair of the witch and often commit suicide afterwards. The witches themselves have an abstract appearance that reflects their preferences and live in an equally abstract labyrinthine magical barrier ( 結 界 , Kekkai ). These witches also release so-called familiars who also hunt people. They are much weaker and do not leave behind grief seeds, but they can develop into witches.
Soul Gem ( ソ ウ ル ジ ェ ム , Sōru Jemu )
The soul gem is the source of the powers of a magical girl or her soul. It has the ability to light up if a witch or a familiar is nearby. The Soul Gems are usually in the shape of an egg, but they can also be changed and worn as a ring on the finger, for example. The energy of a soul gem is depleted through the use of magic, making it dull and dark. A soul gem can be purified with a witch's grief seed, which refreshes its shine and the magical energy of the Magical Girl.
Grief Seed ( グ リ ー フ シ ー ド , Gurīfu Shīdo )
A grief seed looks like a black, thorn-reinforced ball and is also known as a witch's egg. Before a witch slips out of it, she builds a magical barrier out of the safe shell in which she can hide. As a necessary source for the energy of a magical girl, the witch must first be killed. Overusing the Grief Seed to purify a Soul Gems could result in another witch hatching out of it. To prevent this, Kyubey consumes the used grief seed, which avoids the danger.

Social references

The story of Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika mixes the typical elements of a magical girl anime with those of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's Faust. A tragedy . The transformation into a magical girl is coupled with a free wish and at the same time a pact. The magical being Kyubey takes on the role of Mephistopheles . So it is always willing to provoke the girls to enter into the pact, even though his hands are tied. For example, it is not allowed to make suggestions for what the girls want and is always only half the story. The young girls, on the other hand, take on the role of Faust, although here, too, it becomes clear that the lure proves to be a fallacy. The reverence for Faust is particularly evident in the fact that quotations from Goethe are repeatedly interspersed in the background.

Sayaka Miki's story also shows parallels with the fairy tale The Little Mermaid by Hans-Christian Andersen . She and the protagonist each fall in love with a male character, Sayaka wants Kyōsuke Kamijō's left hand to be healed and the little mermaid saves a prince from death at sea. But neither of the two female characters come together with the respective beloved, instead the respective beloved becomes a couple with another girl, even though Sayaka or the mermaid paid a high price - Sayaka's soul has become a soul gem, which is why she feels like a zombie as a magical girl and cannot imagine a love relationship with Kyōsuke due to inferiority complexes; At the beginning, the mermaid did not have a soul like humans and, in return for human legs, has lost her voice and cannot confess her love to the prince. Both girls fall victim to their desperation and apparently end tragically. Sayaka becomes the witch Oktavia von Seckendorff , who resembles a mermaid, and is killed; and the little mermaid, who is actually no longer a mermaid, becomes sea foam. But both have a happier fate. The goddess of hope Madoka prevents Sayaka from turning into a witch and leads her to a better place. And the mermaid transforms as foam into an air spirit, which gives her the opportunity to achieve an immortal soul through good deeds and thus participate in the "eternal happiness of people".

The Grief Seeds also represent an analogy to the animal kingdom, in which the witches represent the defensive prey for which the Magical Girls 'tear' each other and show a certain territorial behavior of loners among each other . After all, they need these seeds in order not to lose their skills or their lives. This is made clear by the example of Mami, whom Homura asked several times to make it clear that it was her 'hunting ground' or her witch.

Origin and publications

The series was created in the Japanese animation studio Shaft after the idea of Magica Quartet, the collective pseudonym of the director Akiyuki Shimbō, the screenwriter Gen Urobuchi , Ume Aoki who designed the characters, and Shaft. Based on Aoki's designs, Takahiro Kishida then worked out the character design that was ultimately used . Yuki Kajiura was responsible for the background music .

The first broadcast of the series began on the night of January 7, 2011 (and thus on the previous television day ) on the MBS station . A day later it was broadcast on TBS . In the following days, the CBC station also followed . The series was made available on the Internet on the Nico Nico Channel , Biglobe Stream and ShowTime offers .

As announced on Wednesday, March 16, the eleventh episode of the series was not broadcast on Japanese television. The trigger for this was the Tōhoku earthquake in 2011 , after which various programs with tragic content or that were thematically related to the disaster were temporarily removed from the program. The broadcasters gave "self-restraint" as the reason. This also applied to all offers on the Internet. The original episode contained scenes with people fleeing seeking shelter in emergency shelters and Homura trapped under debris.

The main person in charge of the script, Gen Urobuchi, apologized for the suspension of the anime, but announced at the same time that he was even a little happy about it, since the Shaft studio would hardly have been able to meet the completion dates anyway. Individual episodes were finished just a few hours before the first broadcast on Friday. So there was enough time to revise the elaborate animations of the 11th and 12th episodes, which otherwise might have been rather disappointing.

While most programs were continued relatively promptly, the last two episodes of Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika were only broadcast together on April 22, 2011 on MBS and TBS. The date was announced in the affected areas by a full-page advertisement in the morning edition of the Yomiuri Shimbun on April 21, 2011. In the Kansai region, the 12th episode achieved an audience rate of 2.3% and a market share of 22.6%.

The sales start of the series was postponed by about a month due to the earthquake and the delayed broadcast. Sales of the first of a total of six data carriers began on April 27, 2011, the last of which is due to appear on September 21, 2011. All editions appear as normal and limited Blu-ray and DVD versions. The first Blu-Ray sold 53,000 times in the first week, replacing Bakemonogatari (51,000), from the same director and studio, with the best-selling anime Blu-Rays in the opening week, although it was due to an error after two days in the second episode came a recall. On the first day alone, 22,000 copies were sold, making the Blu-ray Disc in the Oricon charts on April 26 (one day before the official sales date) at number 6 of all Blu-ray sales and at the end of the week 7th place was.

In North America, the anime was licensed by Aniplex of America, who released it between February 14 and June 12, 2012 under the title Puella Magi Madoka Magica on 3 DVDs or Blu-Rays. In addition, it appears there in a limited collector's version on DVD or Blu-Ray hybrid with soundtrack. It has also been streamed on Crunchyroll since February 15, 2012 .

The series was licensed in German by Universum Film , which will publish it on 3 DVDs at monthly intervals from March 30, 2012 under the Latin title Puella Magi Madoka Magica , which was also used as a subtitle in the Japanese original.

On September 30, 2015, Universum Anime announced that they had secured the rights to the movie: Madoka Magica - The Movie: Rebellion . It was released on Blu-ray and DVD on January 8, 2016.

Manga

The publisher Hōbunsha is planning three manga adaptations, which will be published during and after the broadcast of the anime. Due to the March 11th 2011 earthquake, some of these publications have been postponed. The Puella Magi Madoka Magica series is a three-volume version of the anime's original script. All three volumes have also been published in English by Yen Press . The first volume was published here on May 29, 2012 and the other two followed on August 21 and December 11 of the same year. A German edition with all three volumes was published by Carlsen Comics since March 2013 .

A side story is the manga Puella Magi Kazumi Magica - The innocent malice ( 魔法 少女 か ず み ☆ マ ギ カ〜The innocent malice〜), which is written by Masaki Hiramatsu and drawn by Takashi Tensugi . Publication began on January 24, 2011 in the March issue of Manga Time Kirara Forward magazine and ended in November 24, 2012 in the January issue of the magazine. So far, four edited volumes have been published. The fifth and final volume will be published on January 12, 2013. Like the first manga series, this series was also licensed by Yen Press. A publication should take place from mid-2013.

A third adaptation, titled Mahō Shōjo Oriko Magica ( 魔法 少女 お り こ ☆ マ ギ カ ), was published in two volumes after the anime was broadcast. It was drawn by Kuroe Mura and takes place in a different timeline than the anime in which the girls investigate a case in which Mahō Shōjos are hunted. A side story based on this also appeared in the second and third issue of Manga Time Kirara Magica with the title Noisy Citrine . This manga was also licensed by Yen Press. The two volumes of the series were published in German by Carlsen Comics in January and April 2014 .

With Puella Magi Madoka Magika - A different story ( 魔法 少女 ま ど か ☆ マ ギ カ ~ A different story ~ ) another manga drawn by Hanokage was released. The plot follows that of the original in key scenes, but the entire constellation that leads to the events and the relationships between the characters have been changed. Like the other manga, this was also published by Hōbunsha and was published in three Tankōbon editions.

This manga was licensed in the US by Yen Press and is due to appear in March 2014.

In addition, two anthologies with stories by different authors were published on September 12, 2011 and March 12, 2012.

For the third film, Colorful ( カ ラ フ ル , Karafuru ) by ClariS was used in the opening credits and Kimi no Gin no Niwa ( 君 の 銀 の 庭 ) by Kalafina in the credits .

Video games

Based on the anime, the computer game Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magika Portable ( 魔法 少女 ま ど か ☆ マ ギ カ ポ ー タ ブ ル ) was created for the PlayStation Portable , which was published by Namco Bandai Games on March 15, 2012. This was followed by the first person shooter Mahō Shōjo Madoka Magica TPS featuring Homura Akemi , which was released for Android devices in December 2011. Likewise, the characters or just their clothes were integrated into other games. These include Gods Eater Burst and Tales of Xillia 2 in which the characters and / or costumes could be unlocked via the Playstation Network.
