Pulwama is a district in the Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir .

Pulwama is centrally located in the Kashmir Valley , 20 km south of Srinagar . In 2007, the western part of what was then the district was carved out and has since formed the newly established Shopian district . The district administration is based in Pulwama City .

The Pulwama District has four Tehsils : Awantipora, Pampore, Pulwama, and Tral. The district is also divided into five blocks: Tral, Keller, Pampore, Pulwama and Kakapora. Each block has a number of panchayats .

population

According to the 2011 census , the Pulwama district has a population of 560,440. It ranks 537 out of 640 districts in India. The district has 598 inhabitants per square kilometer. Its population growth from 2001 to 2011 was 29.18%. The district has a gender distribution of 913 women for 1,000 men. The literacy rate was 63.48%.,.
