The Roman Guard Baden-Baden eV is a traditional and carnival association in central Baden. The association deals with the history of Baden-Baden (Aurelia Aquensis), especially with its Roman origins, in the tradition of the Roman emperors and legions who founded what was then Aurelia Aquensis and who decisively shaped the development of the city through the discovery of the springs and baths . Typical elements of clothing and robes of the Romans are taken into account , also according to the purpose at that time. The basis for this is the relevant historical literature, statues, traditional drawings, etc.
The association is a member of the Bund Deutscher Karneval , the Association of Badisch-Palatinate Carnival Associations and the Baden-Baden Carnival Festival Committee .
origin
In the mid-1990s, the Baden-Baden Narrenzunft eV association came up with the idea of making Baden-Baden's Roman history tangible and visible. This resulted in an internal subdivision dedicated to the Roman theme.
activities
The Roman Guard Association was formally founded on November 11th (“November 11th”) 1998 and presents the Roman history of Baden-Baden in its activities. Its active members appear regularly at official celebrations and events in Mittelbad. These include u. a. the 500th anniversary of Baden-Baden's city regulations in 2007, the city festival in 2012, the annual plum festival of the city of Bühl (Baden) , the annual carnival gala in the Kurhaus Baden-Baden as well as various parades and events in the Baden-Baden area.
equipment
The male active appear at events in the robes of Roman soldiers ( Lorica Segmentata and Cassis ) and carry the traditional short weapons ( gladius ), spears ( pilum ) and shields ( scutum ) as well as an aquila (standard) . The exact clothing and equipment depends on the rank of the active: Legionnaire , Praetorian or Centurion .
The female active wear a robe that is based on the stole (Roman costume) .
In addition, replicas of Roman chariots and, in summer, Roman military tents are used.
Golden Mercury
Based on Baden-Baden's local mountain, the Merkur , the Roman Guard awarded the Golden Mercury until 2012 to personalities in politics who "have not lost their sense of humor despite their position and their sometimes very hectic and unpleasant daily routines." The Golden Mercury was a challenge award.
