The Royal Air Force Station Mount Pleasant , RAF Mount Pleasant for short , is a military and civilian airfield on East Falkland .

The Royal Air Force airfield opened in 1985 and has two paved runways. Its name comes from the mountain range of the same name located about three kilometers to the north.

The swarms ("Flight") stationed here are subordinate to the 905th Squadron ( No. 905 Expeditionary Air Wing ):

  • No. 1310 Flight : Since the beginning of July 2016, two Chinooks have been ensuring the rotary wing troop transport instead of the Sea Kings (see also below) .
  • No. 1312 Flight : Vickers VC10 K4 transport and tanker aircraft were stationed at the airport for a long time; before the decommissioning in September 2013, the last machine of the Mount Pleasant type left the end of August 2013. The RAF temporarily stationed a Tristar K1 and then a Voyager KC2 for this purpose until February 2014 . From April 1, 2018, an Atlas C1 will be an integral part of the flight and will replace the Hercules previously stationed there .
  • No. 1435 Flight : In October 2009 the Tornado F3s used for air defense were replaced by 4 Typhoon FGR4s .

Bristow Helicopters

The Sea King helicopters of the RAF used for troop transport, but especially for SAR tasks, were replaced by rescue helicopters from a private consortium on April 1, 2016, after more than three decades of service in the South Atlantic. The company British International Helicopters ever two Sikorsky S-61 and AgustaWestland AW189 stationed on the Falklands.
