The Auguste George Airport ( IATA code NGD , ICAO code TUPA ), and Captain Auguste George Airport or Anegada Airport , the airport of the British Virgin Islands , a British overseas territory , belonging Island Anegada in the Caribbean .

history

A former airfield on Anegada with a runway that consisted only of compacted soil is considered to be the beginning of aviation in the British Virgin Islands. It was on the western end of the island near Cow Wreck Beach . This airfield is now completely overgrown. Auguste George Airport opened in 1969.

After the security zones had been enlarged and the fire-fighting options improved, the airport was approved for international flights in 2009, so that connections to destinations outside the British Virgin Islands were now also possible. The British Virgin Islands government hoped that this would boost tourism on Anegada. In April 2013, the airport was closed for about a week due to problems with the fire engine and protection against stray animals. It was then reopened, but without approval for international flights. It was not until October 2013 that the airport received its approval for international flights. In February 2014 it was reported that no customs officer had been at the airport for a long time . One of the reasons given was the poor condition of the workrooms. In October 2014, the operator announced that it would extensively renovate the terminal building by November 2014 and take further measures for the security and exterior design of the airport.

Considerations of building a new, large international airport on Anegada instead of the planned expansion of the airport on Tortola have been postponed until further notice.

The airport is located at the highest point on the island, which is flat overall, in the middle, near The Settlement .
