The Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport ( IATA code EIS , ICAO code TUPJ ) is the largest airport in the British Virgin Islands , a British overseas territory in the Caribbean . It lies on the island Beef Iceland , a neighboring island of Tortola , the largest of the British Virgin Islands.

history

The airport opened as Beef Island Airport and was renamed in 2001 in honor of former British Virgin Islands Minister Terrance B. Lettsome . In the same year, planned expansion work began in 1988 and was completed in 2004 at a total cost of 70.5 million US dollars. Flight operations did not have to be interrupted for the work. A new passenger terminal , which is about four times the size of the previous terminal, an air freight terminal , a new tower , a building for the airport fire department , additional infrastructure and a new access road were built. In addition, the runway was extended and new parking positions for aircraft were built.

At the end of 2016 it was announced that the China Communications Construction Company had received the order for another expansion. The runway is to be extended to around 2160 meters, so that in the future Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800 aircraft can also land and take off.

location

The airport is located at the western end of Beef Island. This is by a narrow strait separated from the island of Tortola and the latter by the 70-meter long Queen Elizabeth II Bridge connected. The capital of the British Virgin Islands, Road Town , is about nine kilometers west of the airport on Tortola.

Facilities

The airport has an asphalt runway 1416 meters long and 30 meters wide, as well as a passenger terminal and an air cargo terminal. The track begins and ends directly on the bank. All flights to and from Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport are operated under visual flight rules .
