The Virgin Gorda Airport ( IATA code VIJ , ICAO code TUPW ), the operator also Taddy Bay Airport called, which is the airport of the British Virgin Islands , a British overseas territory , belonging to the island of Virgin Gorda in the Caribbean .
history
The airport was from a resort of 5 star built and purchased in 2005 for 2.9 million dollars from the Government of the British Virgin Islands. In 2010 it was closed for a long time due to extensive work to extend the runway and to build a new terminal . The closure was preceded by safety concerns from Air Safety Support International , the Civil Aviation Authority responsible for the UK overseas territories . The closure brought disadvantages for the tourism industry of Virgin Gorda, as tourists now had to be picked up from the Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport with a specially set up ferry connection to the neighboring island of Tortola . After the work was completed, flight operations were resumed.
location
The airport is located in the south-east of the island near Spanish Town, right on Taylors Bay. The runway runs parallel to the bank.
Facilities
The airport has a runway 937 meters long and 18 meters wide with a surface of compacted fine gravel , an asphalt apron and a terminal building. In bad weather, pilots must expect the runway conditions to deteriorate. All flights to and from Virgin Gorda are operated according to visual flight rules and are subject to special regulations for the qualification of pilots.
incident
On April 7, 1996, when a DHC-6 Twin Otter of Dolphin Express Airways ( aircraft registration number N143SA ) took off on the way to Saint Croix, it came to a lateral deviation from the runway. The aircraft collided with a fence and the wing was torn off. The aircraft was damaged beyond repair; one of the nine passengers suffered minor injuries in the accident, the other passengers and the two pilots were uninjured.
