The RAG Aktiengesellschaft (formerly Ruhrkohle AG ) is a German company based in Essen , traditionally in the area of coal industry operates, has gained in recent years through acquisitions and a strong chemical business and in addition worked in power plant construction and in real estate. On September 14, 2006 the so-called "white area", i.e. H. the non-hard coal divisions chemicals, energy and real estate, spun off into RAG Beteiligungs AG, which was renamed Evonik Industries AG on September 12, 2007 . In 2017 the company moved completely from Herne to Essen, on the site of the former Zeche Zollverein . The new building on the premises of the Zeche Zollverein cost the group 25 million euros.

history

The company was founded on November 27, 1968 as a consolidation company for German hard coal mining. At that time it comprised 80% of the German hard coal mines. In 1969, the business basis of the company was secured with the smelter contract between Ruhrkohle AG and the German smelters.

In 1972 the company employed 168,400 people and had an annual turnover of 7.2 billion DM.

In 1975, the coal pfennig was used to directly subsidize German hard coal mining by adding a surcharge to the electricity price. This subsidy was declared unconstitutional in 1994. Subsidies for the company and the reduction of production capacities for the period up to 2012 were negotiated with the German government in various agreements .

In 1998 the company took over Saarbergwerke and in 1999 Preussag Anthrazit GmbH. As a result, the Ruhrkohle subsidiary DSK AG became the owner of all the German hard coal mines that were still producing. In this context, the group also operated a number of factory railways and mine dumps .

The company then changed - among other things through the takeover of Degussa and STEAG - into a globally active, diversified mining, energy and chemical group.

After the takeover of Degussa and STEAG, Ruhrkohle AG changed its name to RAG Aktiengesellschaft.

On September 14, 2006, the Chemicals , Energy and Real Estate business areas of RAG were spun off in the form of RAG Beteiligungs-AG and renamed Evonik Industries AG on September 12, 2007 , because the old name RAG was too closely associated with coal and mining and on the other hand, they did not want to scare off international investors, because “rag” means “rags” in English.

RAG Montan Immobilien

RAG Montan Immobilien GmbH, formerly Montan-Grundstücksgesellschaft mbH (MGG,) based in Essen is a company in the RAG Aktiengesellschaft association that manages, renovates, develops and markets the Group's areas and real estate. The Montan-Grundstücksgesellschaft mbH (MGG) was founded in 1977. Until the end of the 1980s, the company concentrated on the supra-regional development and utilization of former mining areas on the Saar and Ruhr and on the privatization of the old mining settlements. Since the 1990s, the focus has been on land and project development. RAG Mining Solutions GmbH (RMS for short), founded in May 2009, offers German mining technology and services worldwide.

RAG sale

RAG Sales GmbH marketed the coal products of RAG's own mines, in addition, it marketed some of the tailings that arise with coal production and was active in the prospering market of material flow management for the resource-saving processing and reuse of different materials. Ruhrkohle countertrade

RAG BILDUNG GmbH, a 100% subsidiary of RAG Aktiengesellschaft, was a company in the field of vocational education and training based in Essen. On June 1, 2010, the company was taken over by TÜV NORD AG and renamed TÜV NORD Bildung GmbH und Co. KG. RAG rail and port

The former Zechenbahn- und Hafenbetriebe Ruhr-Mitte (ZuH) were renamed RAG Bahn und Hafen (BuH) in 1993 and sold to Railion Deutschland (now DB Cargo ) in 2005 , today the company is operated under RBH Logistics and is involved in rail freight transport, port handling and Inland shipping.

RAG Ruhranalytik

RAG Ruhranalytik GmbH was an independent, accredited testing laboratory in Herne, whose main focus was on the field of solid fuels. On May 31, 2017, RAG Ruhranalytik GmbH was merged with the acquiring RAG Beteiligungs-GmbH .

RAG German hard coal
