Ewald
Ewald , with the (rare) variants Ewalt , Ewaldt and Evald , is an old German male given name that is also used as a family name today.
Origin and meaning
The name is, like many other old German first names, a two-part personal name, from the old high German noun ewa with the basic meaning 'law, law, order' and the also old high German verb waltan with the meaning walten , (govern), rule, guard .
distribution
Ewald came up as a saint name in the early Middle Ages ; it was the name of the two Ewaldi brothers , two Anglo-Saxon missionaries who, according to legend , were slain near Aplerbeck in the 7th century .
The name was initially only widespread in the areas of worship of the two saints, namely in Westphalia , in the Rhineland and (in the form of Ewout ) in adjacent parts of the Netherlands . It was not used in the whole of German-speaking countries until the 18th century .
name day
Usually on October 3rd, as was originally the case in the dioceses of Paderborn and Münster; in Cologne but on October 22nd.
