Citizen Kane - The Hollywood legend (original title: RKO 281 ) from 1999 is a biographical television drama about the making of the classic film Citizen Kane by the American director Orson Welles .

The television film produced by HBO shows the fight of young Orson Welles ( Liev Schreiber ), RKO studio boss George Schaefer ( Roy Scheider ) and screenwriter Herman Mankiewicz ( John Malkovich ) while shooting the greatest American film of all time, Citizen Kane . The American-English original title RKO 281 is the production number of Citizen Kane .

action

As a famous young genius who celebrated a sensational career start in New York with his fictional reportage War of the Worlds , Orson Welles is brought up on the subject for his first film. At an evening party at Hearst Castle, he has a verbal argument with media tycoon William Hearst ( James Cromwell ). Welles decides to make a movie about Hearst. It takes some time to convince co-writer Herman Mankiewicz and the studio, but Welles eventually gets the script and the green light, with the film's subject being kept top secret from the press.

When the rough cut is finished, Hearst gets wind of the production and notices that this film is a really little veiled and extraordinarily unvarnished description of his life. Hearst embarks on a malicious campaign, using his power and influence to not only prevent the film from showing, but also to destroy it completely and for good.

criticism

The lexicon of international films judged the production to be a "fascinating biopic". The film offers a "thoroughly committed insight into the mechanisms of the film industry, which [...] cannot do without clichés". "However, it [...] succeeds in sketching the greatness of a genius".

Awards

RKO 281 won the Golden Globe Award in 2000 in the Best Mini-Series or TV Movie category . At the Emmy Awards , the film was honored in the categories of Best Cast and Best Score .
